About Melissa

My name is Melissa G. and this is my 11th year of teaching. I graduated in 2003 with a degree in elementary education and continued on to get my English as a second language program certification. After college I worked as a learning support aide for three years. Then I taught second grade, kindergarten and fifth grades until I was hired as an English as a second language program specialist in 2010. I have been working one-on-one with English language learners for the past 4 years. The ages of my students can range anywhere in the k-12 age range. I find working with individual students very rewarding and it is something I am very passionate about. Working with my students to develop habits and understanding that will help increase their success in the classroom is one of my overall goals. I am extremely flexible and hardworking but I have also been blessed with many talented educators who have been a part of my career. The experience and materials that I have been able to collect continually make me a better educator.
Through working with my students, they have taught me to individualize my tutoring methods to meet the needs of any student. As most teachers say, I wear many hats during my day. An assessment of what a student is struggling with or what they need more support on will give me a starting place but then the road gets very foggy as we continue down the road of education. We go forward together, backward together, and sometimes stay in one place for a while until the road becomes clear on how to proceed. The most important part of this process is to listen to the student. They have the best understanding of what they do or do not understand. In the end, they teach me as much as I end up teaching them. That is one of the best rewards of teaching.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
