About Ann

I have a Master's degree in Reading, Certified K-12. I have a Teaching Certificate: Secondary English, Grades 7-12 and I have completed the training portion of an IMSLEC approved Orton Gillingham program.

I am an experienced, enthusiastic and knowledgeable reading specialist and English teacher. I have been teaching children and adults for about 20 years in both public schools and nonprofits. I take great pride in helping my students to become confident, independent learners by pushing them to reach their goals and guiding them along the way. I pride myself in working with students who are several years behind and seeing them grow to reach mastery learning.

I am well-versed in well-known methodologies of teaching reading, writing, phonics, spelling, and vocabulary. I instruct parents on how to teach their children as well by modeling or showing them my methods and strategies. My approach to teaching is direct, explicit and systematic--I break concepts down into easy to understand concepts, and I make difficult concepts easier to understand by approaching them in smaller steps. I make sure that learning is fun and I infuse games and other student-friendly activities into my lessons. I always give homework for reinforcement of concepts and make sure family members are involved too.

I am a personable, friendly person and I enjoy working with students of all ages--even adults. If you want to work with a teacher who is passionate about teaching and effective at it, please call me and we'll create a learning plan together. I have a flexible schedule with a variety of times available for tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

The majority of students I work with have some type of dyslexia. I use an Orton Gillingham approach for these students which includes direct, systematic, sequential instruction. I have had much success with this approach.

Handwriting

I use a multisensory handwriting program called Handwriting Without Tears, which as trained me to teach early learners or students who struggle with handwriting. I have also developed specialized handwriting papers for certain students.

Phonics

I have been instructed in two different phonics programs and have learned quite a bit as a teacher to implement the based program based upon Orton Gillingham principles.

Study Skills

I have taught middle, high school and college students how to approach homework assignments and tests. When teaching students study skills, I have shown them strategies for tackling textbook reading using a revised SQ3RR method, using textbook mapping and vocabulary memorization strategies. I have taught students how to highlight documents, glean notes from textbooks, and how to approach learning vocabulary words. I have also taught students how to prepare for tests, how to analyze and answer questions on tests, and how to ensure they have the right answers.

Writing

I have a Master's degree in Reading, which includes reading, writing, vocabulary, etc. for all ages. I am a certified and experienced Reading Specialist and English Teacher. I have had two articles published in Miss Millennia (online ezine) and three poems published in Baily's Beads, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Literary Magazine.
