Gannon University (Mechanical Engineeri)
Hello! I graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA from Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania in May of 2009 with a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in math. In high school I was a national merit finalist and scored a perfect 1600 on my SAT. I took the GRE in 2008, attaining a perfect math score of 800 and similarly high scores for the verbal and analytic sections. I worked for three years as a systems engineer for a defense contractor in the Washington DC area, and I have a strong interest in teaching others to excel in math and science. I moved back to Erie and I now work as a mechanical engineer.
It is very important to me that my students truly understand the concepts they bring to me for help. Too often I find that students are simply following recipes to arrive at answers. Usually, the main ingredient in that recipe is their calculator. I like to teach them to rely not on memorization or technology, but instead on building strong fundamentals and learning to apply those fundamentals deliberately to solve any problem they face. Ultimately, my goal is to help them develop the skills they need to solve problems independently. Hello! Mr. P. is a very able and knowledgeable tutor! He was very ready to work with me using past work which I did not understand and help link that to the studies leading up to current work. He does the very best at giving examples as well as providing me with practice problems that allowed me to work it out until it is known completely. His technique of teaching involves allowing me to take down notes, practice along side him as well as learning not to depend entirely on the calculator! He is also willing to review a problematic subject until I have built up confidence in myself; That I have understood it and can apply it to several example problems.
He encouraged me to go more in depth of what I did not understand and encouraged me with practice so that I could get past the "I don't get it" to "Oh, I see now!".
He also helped me recognize the small errors that I tend to make such as the square root of an answer always has two answers! I highly recommend anyone to choose him to be their child's tutor because he has done a lot for me during my reviewing for my Big SOL. By the way, I felt really confident when I completed the questions with Standard Deviations!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an undergrad, I majored in mechanical engineering and minored in mathematics. This included the full offering of calculus available at my institution, for a total of 12 credit hours of calculus. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA overall, so I am very comfortable with calculus.

I have considerable experience with both creative and technical writing. In high school I was a member of Fresh Ink, a program run by the Erie Times-News in Erie, PA that published articles written by high students from the area. My articles were published on a number of occasions. In college, I wrote numerous lab reports. Through these reports, I sharpened my ability to write concisely and clearly. These qualities are very desirable when completing the SAT writing sections, including both the multiple choice sections and the essay.
