I have been teaching for the last 8 years, as well as, tutoring for the last 3 years. Teaching children is what I love to do. I take great pride in helping my students understand difficult skills. One of my favorite parts about being a teacher is watching a child have that "A-HA!" moment. Also, I feel it is important to provide my students with the confidence they may lack due to their struggles in school. I try to make our tutoring time fun and productive. Depending on the students age, I will alternate between working and playing educational games that are still teaching them skills, but in an informal way.
I think it is very important talk to a student and understand what their anxieties are about a subject. I also like to find out what motivates them and use that as positive reinforcement for working hard. I have learned from my tutoring experience that each child is different. Some really want to learn and catch up to their peers, while others have little desire to be tutored outside of school. I am dedicated to each of my students and their success matters to me. I hope to find parents that feel the same way. Finding a home tutor is the first step in the right direction to getting your child the help he/she needs.
Reading is one of the most important skills a student can master. I like to use various tools and strategies to accomplish my students reading goals. Each student is different, but here are a few things I have focused on in the past. Students will practice reading with fluency, reading with punctuation, sounding out and decoding new difficult words, practicing sight words and practice reading comprehension/writing skills using questions and worksheets. I like to let my students choose at least two books for reading. I have them choose a book that is on their level and one that is slightly above their level. Giving them something to work towards and giving them the feeling of success with a book that is harder can boost a students confidence tremendously.
I have several years of experience working with children of various ages and skill levels. I know how to motivate and encourage students to feel good about themselves. I truly am proud when my student succeeds, no matter how little the triumph may seem.
I believe phonics is the basis for any good reader. Without phonics it is almost impossible for a new reader to decode words of any size. I teach young children all the phonics rules from basic letter sounds up to prefix and suffixes (depending on grade level). I have several resources that I have collected over the years from various reading specialists.
I try to be as flexible as possible with times and days needed. Please feel to contact me with any questions. My first visit is free, I like to speak with the parents, students and teachers, if possible, to gain as much information as possible before creating a structured tutoring session. If your student has an IEP or 504 plan I would also like to see a copy of it. If you feel as strongly as I do about getting your child help, please call or email me. Thank you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching K-6 for the last 8 years in various grades. I have my degree in early childhood and elementary education. I am a certified teacher, who has passed all the necessary PA state Praxis exams to obtain my certification.
I have been tutoring for the last 3 years with children in first and second grade and we have been focusing on phonics. We start with basic letters sounds, digraphs, word families, blends, etc. I work up to more complicated suffix and prefixes and rules such as silent "e", vowel teams, and chunking sounds. While teaching I concentrate on the same rules and work in small groups to address students with Individualized Education Plans.
