About Elayna

When I was an undergraduate studying English, I did not have teaching in mind. My plan was to get into publishing. However, my life took a very different path. I ended up getting a provisional teaching certificate to substitute teach, which I did for a year before entering graduate school. I paid my way through graduate school by teaching undergraduate composition and research writing courses, and I developed a love for teaching. From there, I progressed to teaching for six years at a private high school. There, I honed my skills in teaching grammar, literature, composition, and research.

I left full-time teaching to raise my family, but I have kept working as a part-time teacher and tutor. I have taught classes for several local college programs, usually focusing on research writing for adult students. I am adept at both APA and MLA research writing formats. I have also remained active through tutoring. While I have primarily worked with international students, ESL is not my only tutoring experience. Many of my international students have progressed to the point where our tutoring sessions focus on SAT and TOEFL test prep and college essay writing.

I help them with writing assignments that range from science to history, Bible to literature. I help them generate clear and coherent ideas and develop good writing practices, such as brainstorming, outlining, drafting, editing, and proofreading.

I also have a love for grammar and vocabulary. I am a traditionalist, and I teach grammar through methods such as sentence diagramming and vocabulary using Latin and Greek roots. I firmly believe that strong English education is beneficial to everyone, no matter what their academic and career goals may be. I strive to make the subject matter relevant and practical to my students.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
