About Rich

I believe that every student is capable of learning. Having been in the classroom for over 30 years, I have had the opportunity to help thousands of students recognize their potential both as a student and a person, focus on their unique gifts, and encourage their growth as lifelong learners. During my years of teaching, I have taught almost every available core subject to sixth through eighth grade students, but most of my time has been devoted to teaching mathematics. This is what I would consider to be my specialty.

In mathematics, I feel that students should know the basics of math, be able to demonstrate their understanding of the algorithm needed to solve a problem, and be able to function without the use of a calculator. Drill and practice on basic skills is essential to over-all learning. Once these basics are mastered and students are able to think and reason mathematically, then a calculator can be a very useful tool. Problem solving and critical (higher order) thinking skills are essential for students entering our ever-changing and progressive world. Promoting this kind of thinking has been one of my essential tasks that I have used in the classroom throughout my career in teaching elementary / middle school mathematics. By knowing what to do to solve a problem, thinking mathematically, students can then utilize technology to help them reach their overall goal.

I hold myself and my students to high standards. I expect myself to be well-prepared to assist students meet their academic needs, and I expect my students to be well-prepared to learn by having all needed materials in their possession including any assignments that may be given to them between tutoring sessions. To be good at something, we all must be willing to work giving 110% effort at all times. All-out effort and success breeds future success at a much higher rate.

At the present time, I am available for summertime tutoring to help students prepare for the next grade level, refocus on skills missed from a previous year, or just to help with mastery of basic math skills and helping them move to proficient and advanced testing levels. I am also available to work with problem solving and critical thinking skills in mathematics, and can also assist with other elementary / middle school subject areas in preparation for future PSSA / Keystone Tests. In the next few years, I hope to be able to extend this tutoring practice to available hours during the academic year.

Please feel free to contact me if you think I can be of some assistance to you or your child in one of these areas. Thank you for taking the time to read my profile

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
