About Sophia

I have always loved learning, and I am excited to share my passion for education with children in my area. I recently graduated Cum Laude from Gettysburg College with a B.A. in history, with minors in public history and studio art. I plan to further my education and to obtain a masters degree before pursuing a career in the public history and museum education field. I currently work for a local before and after school program as an Activity Specialist, where my job is to plan and create activities which are both fun and conducive to the social, intellectual, and emotional development of the children in my care.

During college, I volunteered as a tutor at El Centro, a program which matched ESL students with college students for help with homework and reading skills. I also taught Catechism classes at my local church's Sunday School, and I have taught classes at local drama and summer camps. In fact, during my senior year of high school, I organized and directed a Drama and Art camp for local students, with great success.

My academic specialties include history, writing, reading, English, art, music, and related fields, although I attended a well-rounded liberal arts college and am therefore proficient in science and mathematics as well. I am a member of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honors fraternity, I was editor-in-chief at the Gettysburg Historical Journal, and I maintained a competitive GPA during my years at Gettysburg while keeping up with extra curricular activities ranging from dance ensemble to marching band to academic conferences.

My goals during tutoring sessions are to help your child to achieve their goals and while pushing them to set higher ones. I will work with you to create an atmosphere which will help your child to succeed academically without overwhelming them or placing undue stress on them.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am a practicing Roman Catholic, and have been raised as such all my life. I taught CCD (Sunday School/Catechism) for three years at my church for children grades pre-k-first grade.

Drawing

I have a minor degree in Studio Arts from Gettysburg College, where I graduated Cum Laude.

Elementary Science

-Proficient and advanced PSSA science scores throughout high school
-High grades in collegiate science courses including Stellar Astronomy (A-) and Oceanography (A)

Flute

I have played the flute for 13 years. While in high school, I was first chair in band for three years, had several solos in band, jazz band, and chamber groups, and attended PMEA District Band twice. In college, I played in the Bullets Marching Band and in the Gettysburg College Wind Symphony.

Painting

I graduated cum laude from Gettysburg College with a minor in studio arts. I took several painting classes, in which I received A's and A-'s. I have also had several paintings be selected for and win prizes in the annual Gettysburg College Juried Student Show.

Reading

I am an avid reader, and I read at an above average level from a young age. I scored at advanced levels on my reading PSSAs and my verbal SATs. I volunteered for a time with El Centro, an afterschool program that aims to help children improve their reading level.
