About Mercedes

My grandmother has always wanted me to be teacher. In fact she was the first tutor I ever had, and she taught me what it means to be a great educator. Howevery I veered from the route of traditional classroom learning because I find it is more effective to work with a student in a more personalized manner, directed at his or her particular learning styles and unique interests.

I have several years of experience with working with children and as an educator. For five years, I served as a pre-k Sunday school teacher at the Crystal Cathedral. For two years I served as an education intern with Glenarm museum, leading school groups that ranged from ages 7-18, as well as public tours of varying ages.

Additionally, I worked as a peer tutor as a student at Bryn Athyn College, tutoring in: biblical Greek, political science, quantitative reasoning, expository writing, film literacy, the classical world, public speaking, and medieval history. And lastly, in June 2016 I attended the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute and received a certificate of completion for their workshop on teaching history to high school students.

In respect to my qualifications for tutoring writing, I have been writing poetry since 2005, and have been a novelist since 2008. I have two completed novels that I am now editing for publication, and my poetry can be found in many online forums. My academic training consists largely of writing research and argumentative papers, and I have extensive experience with various forums of tracking down sources, as well as note-taking skills for easy transfer to document form.

I have experienced several different forms of schooling: public school, classic home school, online, charter school programs, and education in the museum field. In that time, I have discovered that education that goes beyond the classroom is more effective in engaging the whole student, and that is what I aim to do with all the individuals that I tutor.

Every student is unique, and will respond to different forms of education based on their learning styles. The more I meet with the student, the better idea I have on how to engage them, and thus I adjust my methods accordingly. This can go from playing memory games, to using pop culture or literary references to make things relatable, to question and answer or quiz formatting.

Please contact me if you have any questions, or wish to know if I have experience with your particular issue. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

My undergraduate degree is in this subject. Although my fascination within this field stems from my studies of human prehistory, I have worked with modern ethnographic studies. I have written several papers on such things as cultural relativism, the effects of globalism and cultural 'appropriation', and anthropological ethics. I understand the methods that an anthropologist employs when studying various cultures and can help students comprehend similarities between even seemingly disparate cultures.

Bible Studies

A majority of my education has been from a religious perspective, with required biblical studies from 9th grade into my undergraduate program. I can read and translate biblical Greek, and prefer to read the New Testament in the original language as it allows me to avoid any interpretations forced upon me by the Greek to English translator before me. It is also important to note that different versions of the bible exist due to when translations were made. For instance, the original King James contains inaccuracies no longer present in the New King James due to the discovery of older transcriptions of the biblical text.

Classics

The secondary focus of my Human Society degree is in history, largely ancient cultures such as Greece and Rome. My experience with Greek goes from the Minoans on Crete up through the Persian occupation, and up to the Roman takeover. My knowledge of Rome extends from the Trojan War to the accepted date for the Fall of Rome and even into "Holy Roman Empire" and Byzantine empire date discrepancies. I have read various pieces of classical literature, from Homer to Hesiod, and Virgil to Ovid. During my internship at Glencairn Museum, I worked as part of a team to devise a weekend workshop for ages 10-12 that encouraged interaction with classical myths and the cultures that held such gods dear.

English

I have worked as a reading and writing tutor for students at a variety of age and skill levels. It is imperative that students understand the dynamics of writing papers, paragraphs, and sentences, and therefore I put a heavy emphasis on grammar. Once a student knows why a particular way of phrasing an idea is incorrect, they will be able to identify such processes for themselves. It is my goal that my students will eventually be self-sufficient, and I do everything in my power to ensure that that happens. Good writers make good readers. If a student can identify the form of a word, and the elements that make up a sentence, they can more easily disect a text and find hidden meanings, even when it has words that they have never seen before.

Homeschool

I was homeschooled from 7th grade to 12th grade, with several different homeschool programs: online, facilitated, charter school, and classic homeschool. I have a personal understanding of what homeschool is like, and have worked as a facilitator for my younger sister, who is homeschooled as well. I understand the importance of structure and form in keeping homeschool feel like school, but also the flexibility that both students and parents appreciate about the style of learning.

Study Skills

I worked as a Peer Tutor during my time at Bryn Athyn College. The students I worked with were often quite smart but lacked the necessary skills for passing exams. I worked with them to discover what method would would best to help them retain information, such as highlighting, specific and organized note taking, vocabulary cards, Jeopardy, or bingo. Something I found particularly effective was asking students to take the information in the text, summarize it, and explain it back to me. It allowed me to gauge whether the student was actually retaining the information.
