About Simon

Hello,

I'm an Ivy League grad with a Masters degree, a Phi Beta Kappa key, and a long list of teaching experiences. I've taught academics, test prep, reading and writing, and even -- from time to time -- firespinning. Tutoring can be very important, but that doesn't mean it can't also be fun!

I've found over the years that everyone has their own particular style of learning, and when that is not how something is taught in the classroom, what could be an interesting subject becomes a grueling exercise in frustration. That's why I love connecting to people, discovering their individual learning styles, and working with them to present the material in a way that makes intuitive sense to them.

Because, no matter what particular methods are used, the bottom line for tutoring is whether or not the student learns. That's the goal I have going into any tutoring situation, and that's what I stay committed to throughout the entire course of tutoring sessions.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

In addition to considerable experience with tutoring SAT and ACT English, I am a professional writer and editor. Plus, my mother was an editor, so I've had proper grammar hammered into my skull from an early age.

Japanese

I am a Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude graduate of Brown University, where I majored in East Asian Studies, focusing on Japan and the Japanese language.

I studied conversational Japanese for three years in school and for one summer abroad in Tokyo, and Japanese literature (read in the original Japanese) for one year.

I have experience teaching Japanese to many different types of language learners.

I promise both learning and fun! I'm excellent at utilizing the subject material that motivates the student -- anything from textbooks to anime.

I have over a year and a half of private tutoring experience.

Psychology

I have my M.S. in Psychology.

SAT Reading

I got a perfect score of 800 on my SAT Verbal section when I originally took the test. I did not have preparatory tutoring, and have since learned many of the test's tricks and traps.

SAT Writing

When I originally took the SATs, I got a perfect score of 800 on my Verbal section, without any tutoring. Since then, I have had a lot of experience teaching these tests, and have learned plenty of tips and tricks to help my students excel.

In addition to my knowledge of SAT-specific writing, I am a professional writer and editor. This unique combination of skills means that my tutoring produces marked score increases.

Writing

I am a summa cum laude, Phi Beta, Kappa graduate of Brown University.

I was first published when I was 10 years old.

I have written a book that is currently in national distribution.

I am a professional writer.
