Hello! My name is Corri, and I have 12 plus years of experience as an educator. I have a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University and certifications in elementary education, general science and biology. In addition to my tutoring services, I work as an environmental educator.
I help students who need extra support in developing executive function skills. These are the skills that help us to organize and prioritize and help us regulate our behavior for the long-term. Students with ADHD/ADD and many others have challenges with these skills. I help students who are struggling with how to study, the discipline to study, organizing thoughts to write essays, test taking strategies and more. My work is based on the books and experience of many practitioners and researchers, including Dawson and Guare (a team, authors of "Smart But Scattered Teens"), Meltzer and Barkley. I have also completed 30 hours training as an ADHD Coach. I look forward to speaking with you! Hello! My name is Corri, and I have 12 plus years of experience as an educator. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My training for tutoring 7-12th grade students with ADD/ADHD includes the completion of a 30-hour ADD/ADHD course for coaching adolescents with JST Coaching, a premiere training program for youth ADD/ADHD coaching. I also completed an 11 hour seminar with Russell B., Ph.D, a foremost expert on ADD/ADHD research targeted towards educational and child psychologists. My background also includes reading a small (and constantly growing) library of research-based books about teaching young people with ADD/ADHD, including two seminal books about teaching Executive Function Skills: "Promoting Executive Function in the Classroom" by Lynn. and Peggy D. and Paul G.'s "Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents." As a tutor, I receive mentorship from one of my ADD/ADHD coaching teachers, a licensed ADD/ADHD coach and also the Director of Academic Support Services at a liberal arts college.
In my tutorials, I implement research-based strategies used in coaching and developing Executive Function Skills. The basis of this work is to teach students to identify their academically-related goals, raise their awareness about ADD/ADHD, reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses, and discover their own study skill strategies or choose strategies offered by the tutor. My expertise also extends to supporting students in essay writing and note-taking (often difficult for people with ADD/ADHD).
I have been tutoring young people and adults for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs since 1992 and help students chant the Torah, Haftarah and lead services.
I bring a rich background in fluent Hebrew and share a historical understanding with my tutees. This enlivens the tutorials and makes learning more rich and meaningful.
As a person who enjoys lighthearted humor and knows that making things "fun" helps the learning process, I bring funny, lighthearted associations to the material the student is learning. I also have experience tutoring students with
learning or emotional challenges such as reading challenges, anxiety, and ADHD. I facilitate mastery of chanting and leading the service through a step-by-step process which has been very successful. I use the experience I have gained over the years and my educational background to customize my teaching so that each student succeeds... and enjoys the process.
I am a warm, supportive tutor. I understand that a Bar and Bat Mitzvah is a special lifecycle event and because it involves leading the congregation, preparation that is customized and sensitive to the tutee is very important.
have taught middle school math as a long-term substitute teacher and am certified in elementary ed, high school biology and general science (I will soon be certified in other subjects such as chemistry and environmental education).
My middle school math skills are excellent. In my Praxis Elementary Ed (K-6) Tests, I scored 96% on instruction and 97% on content, including a significant amount of elementary school math.
I have 12 plus years' experience as an educator. I have certifications in elementary education, general science and biology. Tutoring 5-12th grade students in study skills is a subset of my work with students with ADD/ADHD. Often, people with ADD/ADHD struggle with Executive Function Skills, which are the foundation for study skills. People not diagnosed with ADD/ADHD can also struggle with Executive Function Skills, thereby leading to study skill challenges. I have developed a toolbox of research-based strategies to help students develop Executive Function Skills such as time management, organization of papers, sustaining attention and planning how to study and do long-term projects. I draw upon my training with JST Coaching (30 hours) and books by Peg D. and Richard G. (authors of "Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents") and Lynn M. ("Promoting Executive Function in the Classroom").
As a tutor, I also receive mentorship from one of my ADD/ADHD coaching teachers, a licensed ADD/ADHD coach and also the Director of Academic Support Services at a liberal arts college.
My tutoring methodology is first to do an informal assessment to determine executive function skill strengths and weaknesses. I then work with the student collaboratively to discover strategies the student thinks might help them. After the student tries a strategy, the student learns how to assess how it went. We continue to work collaboratively in tweaking the strategy or trying a new one. Ultimately, the student learns how to independently recognize when they face a study skill challenge, discover strategies to help them, and assess whether a strategy needs to be tweaked or replaced.
