I have worked with interpreters personally and taught ASL at several schools in Los Angeles and Chicago several years ago. Also, I have taught at summer program for the past few years at Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia PCPD/Deaf Apostolate. I have also taken sixteen hours of training regarding interpreter's code of ethnic through the Certification Deaf Interpreter program at Gallaudet University by Steven Walker. My international education experience have also helped me to understand differences in culture and helped me to understand why people choosing to work in the field of Deafness must have a positive attitude and inspirations.
It is important to me to be a role model to the students/interpreter by showing how to collaborate with other Deaf clients or students in education, legal, medical, business, theater and personal settings in order to be the best and work within the code of ethics. I would also like to help students better understand the code of ethics, levels of ASL, idioms of ASL, slang, inside jokes, history of Deaf culture, the Deaf community's sub-cultures, and international awareness and issues in the Deaf community. At this moment, I am currently working with the Interpreter Training and American Sign Language Program at Community College of Philadelphia.
The skills that I feel I can offer as a sign language instructor include:
- excellent leadership skills developed by teaching from my native American Sign Language, including management in classroom and meeting student's needs.
- attention to detail, gained from experience in tutoring interpreters to increase their skills, scheduling for class's plans, and give feedback to students about their grades
- team-building experience achieved through effectively teamwork, training, and managing to meet student's satisfy.
- consultant for interpreters involved with theater
I also have excellent communication skills and always maintain a gracious and professional manner when communicating with people, including customers, clients, and store staff. I like to be intellectually challenged, I am highly driven, and I strive to be a positive person everyday. My broad experience and range of skills would be a unique asset to your needs. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
