I am a certified Elementary and middle level Math teacher. I also completed my masters degree in Library Science and I am a certified K-12 school librarian. In the past I taught 8th grade math as a long term substitute and was a youth services librarian. I currently teach an SAT prep class through a local rec center for my 10th year. I focus on familiarizing students with the test, teaching them test taking strategies, and practice test questions with them. I am also a Reference and Instruction Librarian at a community college and work daily with students on formatting, researching, and writing college level papers, including APA and MLA citations.
I enjoy working with all ages of students and helping them gain the confidence they need to succeed in a subject area. I've found most students express dislike towards a subject they struggle with. Guiding them through these struggles often makes them realize the dislike comes from not understanding. Once they gain the skills required to be successful, their attitude often changes and they gain a new found confidence.
I have taught elementary and middle school math. I am comfortable working with students up to the high school level in math, including SAT prep.
I am an avid reader and have taught SAT prep for 10 years. I understand the ins and outs of the new test and help students navigate through the various Reading & Writing questions they'll encounter on the SAT test. I also have experience guiding students through the SAT essay and how to prepare for that element if they choose to take the essay portion.
I am available most evenings and weekends for tutoring, as well as limited daytime hours. I prefer to meet in a public library or coffee shop. Please contact me with any questions. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
