About Deborah

About five years into my career I recognized a desire to understand a better approach in helping the students improve their skills in reading. A Master's of Education degree as a Reading Specialist gave me those skills. A change to the elementary school allowed me to use those skills as well as employ my reading instruction for students with learning disabilities.

With my degree in reading, I have been able to provide successful programs for students in school and through tutoring sessions. An evaluation of reading skills begins each student current levels which will be regularly evaluated to ensure growth and allow me to adapt the instruction to to create the most effective approach.

As a special educator I have taught in self-contained classrooms but as instructional knowledge adapted and moved to encourage instruction to occur in the least restrictive environment and be provided in the regular education classroom I have also provided support in that environment. As these processes changed I also provided reading instruction. Evaluations provide specific details about the areas of need in reading. Many times it is the structure of reading taught through phonics when others may need to focus more on vocabulary and comprehension skills.

In the beginning of my career I envisioned working with students at the elementary level. My early jobs provided opportunities at the secondary level. While I had not originally anticipated working with that particular age group, I did find that I enjoyed it. Eventually opportunities at the elementary level became available. I also enjoyed that age group. The skills for reading are tremendously helpful for teaching spelling. With the inclusion of state tests, study skills have also increased in importance.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

While teaching in Houston, Texas I attended the summer training through Region IV to become a Dyslexia specialist in the school district. It was very similar to the other trainings I have studied in the past years while teaching in other states.

Phonics

I completed my Master's Degree at Loyola College of Maryland to become a Reading Specialist. The course work included understanding and teaching phones skills. This was also part of the training I attended in Houston to become a Dyslexia specialist.
