About Kimberly

I was a Sp Ed middle school teacher in a NYC public school. I was in a self contained 12:1 class for the past three years. I have had students with various disabilities, including Down Syndrome, Autism, Aspergers as well as multiple emotionally disturbed children. Every year that I taught ELA, my students showed growth. In the school year 2012/2013, I had 100% student growth on the new Core Curriculum state exam.

Though I was in a seventh or eighth grade classroom, many of my students functioned at a much lower level. For this reason, I have materials from first grade up to grade eight level. I differentiate lessons in a variety of ways. Since most of my students did have to take the same state exam as the general education students, I have a large variety of tools to teach grade level material to students functioning below grade level. I believe giving the students the skills to learn is how they will learn.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I taught a variety of students with disabilities in a NYC public school. Many of my students were either medicated or non medicated ADD/ADHD. I have a few ways of handling this. My favorite is using a stress ball with the student or working with a reward system.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I earned a Masters in Middle School education, in both general and special education. The last three years, I was teaching in NYC in a self contained 12:1 classroom. My students' disabilities included autism, down syndrome, emotional disturbances, and learning disabled.

Phonics

Being a special education teacher required me to teach the students skills to break down or figure out meanings to words on a daily basis.

Public Speaking

I took several public speaking classes throughout my college degrees. I also taught my students, bothe special education and general education to speak before a group when they presented projects.

Special Needs

I earned a Masters in Middle School education. I also passed the NY State Students with Disabilities exam to earn my certification. I taught only special education the last three years I was in NYC.
