I am a retired public school teacher who spent nearly thirty-five years primarily as a Language Arts/Reading teacher. My Bachelor's Degree is in Elementary Education while my Master's certifies me as a Reading Specialist. I consider myself especially adept in the areas of comprehension, spelling and vocabulary building. I enjoy doing activities with Greek and Latin roots, synonyms and antonyms. I would also feel comfortable helping a prospective student succeed in any other curricular area, grades 4-6. In addition, I am able to instruct in the area of study skills.
If hired, I would first attempt to gather any pertinent background information on the student that would be helpful in our time together. I consider myself quite patient and gracious but also serious about achieving a desired end. I have retained many valuable resources from my years as an employed instructor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I have taught in a public school setting for nearly 35 years. I enjoy working one-on-one with students who want to achieve their goals. I have resources available relevant to this age group.
I was a Catholic school student in my early days. Penmanship was an important part of my education. As a teacher, I taught the Zaner-Bloser method for a few years. With the right materials, this would be an easy task for me.
In my tenure, I've had exposure to a number of study skills programs. I've taught study skills throughout my years as a classroom teacher. It has been a part of my job since I began.
As part of the Language Arts curriculum with which I worked, I occasionally taught basic writing skills (topic sentences, supporting details, concluding sentences), along with the various types of writing (persuasive, informational,...). I'm also quite adept in the grammar end of writing.
