My name is Opal. I have over 10 years as a tutor in various subjects but my main areas are English, Spanish, writing and college preparation. I have degrees in English, Spanish and journalism and spent the last four years studying and teaching English as a second language in Madrid, Spain. I also have experience teaching college writing. I have worked with students of all ages, from kindergarten to teachers. I focus on homework completion, study skills, writing help, English and Spanish language tutoring and college preparation.
Most of my lessons are personalized as I like to get to know my students, so my tutoring approach depends on each student's needs, level and learning style. For each new student I first do an assessment to determine their strengths, then we work to establish a personalized program with realistic achievement goals. I aim to establish an environment of mutual respect and I also try to encourage students to think critically so they can tackle problems by themselves during an exam. I like to give detailed feedback to students and/or parents so they always know how they are improving. I do frequent reviews and always start with topics or subjects students are more familiar or comfortable with before introducing more complex or unfamiliar material making sure to compare similar concepts where applicable.
I consider myself a very patient professional who is comfortable working with any age group in pretty much any setting. My primary goal in working closely with students is social, academic and personal development. My main objective is to improve academic performance but, my aim for the long term is to encourage diligence, initiate and build confidence.
I look forward to meeting and working with you!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
