First, a bit about what I can offer and what my qualifications are: I have years of experience teaching test taking skills for various scholastic and college entrance tests. I specialize in the English (non- math ) portions and in general test taking strategies (which work wonders ! ) . I've been an English teacher at the H.S. level since 2001 and have tutored English as well. I can produce many letters of recommendation from my employers.
I'm generally regarded as being easy going , encouraging and very adept at bringing students into the mindset and skill set they need for academic success . Plain and simple - I love teaching. Whether you've been struggling or simply looking to get your best possible result , extra effort ( especially if that effort is the kind of well targeted effort a private teacher can direct ) can make a huge difference. Please feel free to contact me to see if you feel I can help. There's no cost or obligation of course
Very strong understanding of grammatical skills/sentence structure and the over-all organization needed for writing expository work ( school papers , essays ) . I also have a fine facility for literary analysis and can really help H.S. and college students with close critical reading. I've taught SAT prep classes (and continue to do so in the Bronx NY) for over 10 years.
When I went for my teaching certification I took the Praxis tests. I received a certificate from the Educational Testing Service (ETS - the administrators of the Praxis tests) for "Recognition Of Excellence." They are given to only a top percentage of teacher candidates taking the test . As an experienced English/test prep teacher who has taken and succeeded on Praxis tests, I know I can help others do well too.
An initial chat to see if we'd be a good fit is free of course and always a good idea. If you think a particular study area has been more challenging or difficult than you'd like, I encourage you to take steps to overcome that challenge whether it's with me or someone else. Sitting back struggling is not the best way to spend your time ; the percentage play is to get some help . In doing so you will not only move past an obstacle, but you may very well turn a area of some weakness and problem into an area of strength. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
