About Anne-Marie

I am a graduate of the NYU Steinhardt School of Education, and the Manhattan School of Music. I also did undergraduate work at Vassar College. I have two Masters Degrees and have always excelled academically. I have been a teacher for over twenty years, and I am both patient and thorough.

My specialties are College Counseling, and anything and everything to do with the English language --- grammar, spelling, reading, writing (including college essays), speech and public speaking. I also coach spelling bee participants, work with ESL students, and I do test prep --- NYS ELA exam, SAT and ACT reading and writing, Oral Proficiency Interviews, and the TOEFL exam. Additionally, I have been a violin teacher for over 25 years.

My students, whether music or academic, range in age from elementary to adult. I greatly enjoy my work, both as a counselor and as a teacher, and although my standards are very high, I try to make the experience enjoyable.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am a graduate of NYU's School of Education. I teach and specialize in everything to do with the English language --- ELA, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, pronunciation --- including test prep. I do NY State ELA test prep for grades 3-8, the SAT reading and writing sections, the TOEFL (English) exam for non-native speakers, and the ACT English section. In each case the basic skills needed are the same or similar. The ACT however has one of the more simple and straightforward formats, and I work patiently and thoroughly with students to make it even more clear and accessible.

College Counseling

I received a Master's Degree from NYU, and did undergraduate work at Vassar College. I have worked as a College Counselor with high school students, college transfers and graduate students for more than ten years, including helping my own kids get into Boston College and Princeton. I assist students with the entire college application process, which includes a personal assessment, compatible college suggestions, help with college research and selection, teacher recommendations, test prep, essay and resume writing, application assistance, interview coaching and financial aid guidance, while checklisting and insuring that they meet all requirements and deadlines.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Master's Degree from NYU's Steinhardt School of Education. I have taught for more than 20 years, kids of all ages, and most recently I worked 9 years at the United Nations International School where I worked with grades K-8. Additionally, I have four children, boys and girls, who I coached through every subject during their elementary years and who all excelled. Currently I work with students from 5 years old to adults, with my primary subject being English.

I have a Master's degree from NYU's School of Education and I have taught for many years. English has always been and remains my favorite subject, first as a student and now as a teacher. I have helped many people improve their reading, writing, spelling, grammar and pronunciation of the English language. My students range from elementary school kids to adults, and often are ESL students. I believe everyone should be able to read and comprehend the language, and benefit from all the beautiful literature out there. I also believe that everyone should be able to communicate effectively, whether in writing or through the spoken word, and I enjoy being part of their process.

Over the years I have taught English to students of all races, nationalities and ethnicities. Additionally, living in New York, an extremely diverse city, has necessitated great flexibility on my part. I teach reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and proper pronunciation, but because I work with so many "non-native speakers", I have learned to be very patient and methodical in my approach, customizing the lesson to each student and breaking the steps down as much as is necessary. I have also become quite familiar with many of the handicaps associated with specific ethnic groups when trying to learn English. Overall, as an English teacher I welcome the additional challenge and I always look forward to the opportunity for cultural exchange as well.

From grade school to college, I enjoyed and excelled in the subject of English grammar. I am a mother of four and a teacher, and have had decades of experience teaching grammar to others, including preparing kids for specialized tests such as the SAT. Grammar is the foundation or building blocks that students need in order to speak and write effectively, and this is where every student should start if they are ever to master effective written and verbal skills.

I have been a teacher for more than 20 years, teaching various subjects to students of all ages. I studied Italian first in high school; then throughout my college years. I've become proficient in it and I now tutor students in NYC public schools (primarily high school) that struggle with the language. I am patient, thorough and I try to make it fun and interesting for the students who often come to me quite frustrated initially.

As an English tutor, I work with students everyday on their reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and comprehension. I spend a great deal of time teaching reading, to children and adults alike, and I often start with "phonics". I use materials that introduce new readers to the English language by first learning and becoming familiar with the alphabet and all the various sounds produced thereby.

As someone who teaches English everyday, and specializes in teaching and tutoring writing in particular, proofreading represents 50% of my job. I am responsible for reading, correcting and editing homework assignments, essays, articles and reports of all kinds, for grammatical errors as well as content errors and inaccuracies. It has sharpened my eyes over the years and I tend to be a perfectionist when it comes to proper and correct expression of the English language in writing.

I received my Master's Degree from NYU's School of Education and have been teaching for over 20 years. Over the years I began to specialize. My focus became high school students in general and subjects that pertain to them, such as test prep --- PSAT, SAT, ACT, TOEFL, and also College Counseling. In my work with the various college prep exams over the past ten years, I have become quite familiar with the content, format and best approaches and strategies for success with each one, and I share this with my students in an effort to improve their skills and increase their scores.

Public Speaking

As a teacher, counselor and administrator, I have done a great deal of public speaking over the past 20 years. I also run college readiness workshops for large groups of students and parents. Additionally, because I am generally well received and effective, I am often asked to speak for special occasions. I enjoy teaching this skill to others, and I have found that it is important not only to work on accuracy, clarity and projection of speech, but also on how to prepare and write speeches. I also try to help students find ways to focus and overcome their insecurities in this area.

I am an English teacher and I work with students everyday, from Kindergarten level phonics to Adult literacy. I enjoy opening them up to the world of literature. Reading is an integral part of any learning process and allows us to explore endless topics and stories. I work patiently and methodically to both lower the students' anxiety and build competence and confidence in this area.

I have a Bachelor's and two Master's degrees, one of which is from the School of Education at NYU. I have taught and counseled for over 20 years, and my primary age group has been high schoolers, where I have taught or tutored English, Global History, US History, Italian, and even some math and science (not interested however in those last two subjects for WyzAnt). I also do test prep of all kinds for this age group --- SAT, ACT, TOEFL, and Regents --- mostly English, Global & US History (grades 3-8 Regents in ELA & Math as well), all of which I have done for you in the past two and a half years.

SAT Reading

I am a graduate of NYU's Steinhardt School of Education. As someone who regularly teaches reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary, working with students on the SAT critical reading section is a natural extension of that. I also incorporate many effective test-taking strategies and tips that I have learned over the years, and that help my students successfully maneuver through the SAT AND be effective under pressure.

SAT Writing

I am an English teacher and a graduate of NYU. Writing and editing are my forte. I fill many roles that keep my skills sharp in this area, and as a writing tutor, I regularly teach these skills to others. Preparing for the SAT writing section involves learning these same basic skills, but with the added pressure of time, as well as adherence to a specific format. I help students meet the challenge of honing their writing skills, understanding the SAT format, guidelines and standards, and being able to work effectively under pressure.

I tutor students in English, and I have worked as a teacher for decades. Over the years, I have had to go beyond teaching reading, writing, grammar, etc. and do a lot of work in the area of speech and proper pronunciation. This has primarily been because of my work with ESL students. However, just living in New York City, a multi-cultural setting and where even the native New Yorkers have regional accents, I have often had to address the challenges many students face in the area of proper pronunciation. I also teach public speaking which often involves not just posture, articulation and projection but where we often go into the (physical) mechanics of proper enunciation of words.

I teach all aspects of the English language, and spelling is something that both children and adults, native and non-native speakers, struggle with from time to time. I therefore work patiently and step-by-step with students, often incorporating aspects of phonics as a foundational tool. I also work through practice and pattern recognition over time to slowly improve this ability. This in turn enhances the students' reading and writing skills.

I teach English and I work with students everyday on reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and speaking the English language. Over the years, I have worked with many ESL students. I also do test prep, whether SAT and ACT (English sections) or the TOEFL, to help students get into college. I often work as a College Counselor and in this role, I have come to know a great deal about the TOEFL exam --- the rules/guidelines, how it is administered and scored, and the format and requirements of each area tested. I have also come to know how the scores are interpreted by the colleges and other agencies and what their expectations and standards are. I include all of this when working with the students so that they will be thoroughly prepared for the test.

I have a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Music Performance (violin and viola) from the Manhattan School of Music, and I have taught private lessons and chamber music for over 25 years. I enjoy teaching and making learning fun for the students. The string instruments are very challenging and take time to master so I look for students that are focused, motivated and serious about learning the craft.

I have taught many subjects to all ages for decades. My primary focus at present is English. Although I love teaching English in general, whether reading comprehension, grammar, or general verbal skills, my ultimate passion is writing. Expressing oneself in writing can be very cathartic, and I find that I enjoy helping students find their voice, their perspective and various ways of expressing themselves through the written word. Most students have something to say but lack the tools to effectively express it, so I patiently enlighten, empower and provide those tools.
