I have 33 years of teaching and am now retired but I do miss the interaction with high school students. During my years of foreign language teaching in Catholic (13 years) and finally in public high school (20 years) I also did home bound instruction, volunteer tutoring of current students and private paid tutoring of students from schools other than the one where I taught.
I have always been able to establish a rapport with students both in the classroom and while tutoring privately and I am a very patient teacher. Students whom I tutored privately always said that I increased their confidence as well as their academic understanding.
I did my student teaching in Ecuador while getting my certification from Penn State University, State College, PA. I enjoy helping students learn to communicate and gain confidence. I am highly qualified to teach English as a Second Language also because I had to learn about teaching French and Spanish to American English students. I have a background in Applied Linguistics and the challenges ESL/ELL/ESOL students have in learning American English.
I have extensive travel and educational experience in French-speaking Canada, France, Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, El Salvador and Costa Rica. I enjoy teaching students to appreciate languages other than their own.
I would be most happy to help you reach your goals in French, Spanish or English. I am very approachable and was very happy in and proud of my language teaching years I have 33 years of teaching and am now retired but I do miss the interaction with high school students. Catherine's genuine and heartfelt compassion for teaching is evident in her lesson preparedness, thoroughness, and patience. My daughter looks forward to meeting Catherine each week and is learning so much!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have PA certification in teaching English as a Second Language from Penn State University, State College. We did our student teaching in Ecuador in the summer of 2011. Three of us taught teenage student volunteers and used state of the art teaching techniques. It was a wonderful professional and personal experience for me.
I began studying French in high school; in college, I chose to major in it because I liked it so much. I spent the summer after my junior year in Quebec studying French at Laval University to improve my fluency. After my first year of teaching I spent the summer at the Sorbonne in Paris studying and experiencing living in the Latin Quarter. I taught French for 13 years of my career and loved every minute of it. I also escorted students to Paris for a summer of enhancing their proficiency in the language.
I am a retired Spanish and French teacher. I taught for the last 20 years of my career at Upper Darby High School. I taught Spanish there until my retirement in 2012. I have my teaching credentials from the state of Pennsylvania in French and in Spanish. I have an MA from LaSalle University in Bilingual/Biclultural Studies in Spanish. I thoroughly enjoy teaching students and now have the opportunity to do it one on one.
