About Ryan

I am a recent graduate of Temple University with a major in Classics and a minor in Philosophy. While there, I was a member of the Temple University Classics Club and National Classics Honor Society- Eta Sigma Phi. Classics is a discipline that requires studying the language, history, archaeology, literature, and philosophy of the peoples of the ancient Mediterranean world. Studying Latin has honed my skills of the English language and grammar, allowing for a better understanding of sentence structure and of the rules of grammar of the English language. Studying Philosophy has provided me with a rigorous training in the practices of logical reasoning and argumentative essay writing. Philosophers and Classicists alike rely heavily on an ability to interpret various aspects of texts, process and critically analyze what the authors provide, and formulate a persuasive argument from this analysis. This synthesis of two complementary fields provides me the ability to help students in various subjects, including history, literature, and grammar.

I am a believer that everybody has the intellectual power to succeed in school. No two people learn via the same methods. I would work with students to find out what way they learn the most effectively and cultivate this to make their experience both effective and enjoyable. Students should feel comfortable in providing feedback on their experiences during tutoring sessions. My goal is to make sure I can help students out to the best of my ability, so if a student thinks that the methods I am using need to change, I would keep working until we both agreed on an effective plan. I am aware students seek tutors in subjects that they tend to struggle in. Difficulty in an area of study can give students a dislike for that subject, or learning in general. I would like to not only help the students better understand the subject, but also learn to find some enjoyment out of it, since learning should be fun, in addition to constructive. From my own experience, I find that when I can find something interesting about a subject, I tend to pay more attention and do better in the class.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Archaeology

I participated in an archaeological excavation in Artena, Italy in summer of 2015. I was involved with many aspects including, digging, documenting, cleaning artifacts, and cataloging finds. I also studied Classics, which included learning about archaeology, art history, and architectural history.

Classics

I am a Greek and Roman Classics graduate from Temple University. I have learned about the languages, literature, and culture of the peoples of the ancient Mediterranean. I am also a former member of the Temple University Classics Club and Eta Sigma Phi- National Classics Honor Society.

Latin

I studied Classics at Temple University, which included taking 3 semesters of Latin. I took Latin I through Latin III. The text used was Wheelock's Latin, of which I went through all 40 chapters. I also spent most of Latin III reading some of the letters of Pliny the Younger.

Logic

I minored in Philosophy in college. I took two courses on logic alone as well as many others that required applying the skills. Philosophy classes require one to write out the arguments in symbolic logic format, which I did to earn my minor.

Philosophy

I studied Classics and minored in Philosophy. I took courses in Greek Philosophy, Modern Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Logic, and more. Studying ancient Greece and Rome includes the studying of their respective philosophical ideas and movements. This also involved reading Plato, Cicero, Plotinus, and the works of other ancient philosophers.
