About Annie

I received my degree in secondary English education from Saint Xavier University where I graduated summa cum laude. I have 8 years of experience with tutoring and teaching English test preparation, and 3 years of experience with teaching secondary English students. I tutor from a place of patience and motivation. When tutoring, I try to come up with different creative methods of getting the information across, while always adapting to ever-changing student needs. I take a conversational but firm approach with my lessons in order to help students feel more comfortable with grasping the topic at hand. Students have remarked that they feel at ease with me and are motivated to learn and achieve more. They appreciate the approach and know that I am their number one fan to success. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I taught ACT English after school classes for two semesters. Additionally, I have tutored students using ACT and SAT prep materials. I also integrate ACT/SAT prep into my daily lessons with juniors.

ACT Reading

I taught ACT Reading after school classes for two semesters. Additionally, I have tutored students using ACT and SAT prep materials. I also integrate ACT/SAT prep into my daily lessons with juniors.

ASVAB

After taking the ASVAB myself and achieving a high score, I decided to harness this success into lessons that can help students succeed in their pursuit of a career in the military.

Computer Science

I am certified in Pennsylvania as a Business and Computer Information Technology K-12 educator. I have taught Intro to Computer Science, Computer Science with Mobile Apps, and Web 1. Additionally, I have passed a College Board course certifying me to teach AP Computer Science Principles.

English

I am in my fourth year of teaching English at the secondary level. I have experience teaching classes from special education to AP and honors curriculum. In addition to actual teaching experience, I have many years of tutoring experience, specifically tailored to English and Reading.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked closely with English Language Learners and the ELL teachers in the school to assist students. I am patient but firm with helping students learn English.

Grammar

Grammar is a central part of any English class. Students must understand proper grammar, particularly in persuasive and argumentative writing (where stylistic grammar changes are not prevalent). In my College Prep Writing and other writing courses, I have been adamant about modeling proper grammar so that students can follow this example.

Literature

Most of my classes have been literature-centric, ranging from early to modern pieces. I have experience with teaching World Literature as well as multiple genres of Contemporary and Popular literature.

Phonics

I have most experience in this area with English language learners, or ESL/ELL students. With these students, I help them sound out letters and correlate them with larger words or phrases. I often employ the use of music or song to help in this area.

Proofreading

In my College Prep Writing and Freshman Remedial Writing classes, students are instructed on how to properly proofread and review their work, as well as other students in the class. This skill is essential to clear, concise writing, and is a paramount part of the writing process.

Public Speaking

I received my degree in secondary English education. I have worked with freshman honors students on how to appropriately deliver speeches written by others and by themselves. The students were taught about diction, volume, audience, poise, props, and other important aspects of speech-giving. The students were quite successful in their endeavors, with other teachers commenting on their polished skills.

Reading

I am in my fourth year of teaching English at the secondary level. I have experience teaching classes from special education to AP and honors curriculum. In addition to actual teaching experience, I have many years of tutoring experience, specifically tailored to English and Reading.

SAT Reading

I taught SAT Reading after school classes for two semesters. Additionally, I have tutored students using ACT and SAT prep materials. I also integrate ACT/SAT prep into my daily lessons with juniors.

SAT Writing

I have helped students with evidence-based written analysis in regular classwork as well as test preparation. I am familiar with the new SAT format, and have several years of experience tutoring writing.

Spelling

Spelling is part of my everyday school curriculum. Students are expected to actively seek out new vocabulary definitions on their own, with my guidance. Students proofread one another's work for spelling and other flaws.

Study Skills

I have helped students study for standardized test preparation as well as regular schooling. I have taught ACT study skills for several years, and regular study skills for an equal amount of time. I encourage students with organizational techniques and tricks to help them stay on track with their education. I have 5 years of experience with tutoring and teaching English test preparation.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is part of my everyday school curriculum. Students are expected to actively seek out new vocabulary definitions on their own, with my guidance. Students proofread one another's work for spelling and other flaws.

Writing

I have taught College Prep Writing and Freshman Remedial Writing for a combined 4 semesters. I have tutored students in writing and literacy centers. I walk students through the writing, revising, and polishing processes in order to achieve maximum success.
