Hello! I am a retired teacher from the West Chester Area School District. During my career as an elementary teacher I enjoyed working with students from many different backgrounds and with various needs. Some of my students were ESL students and I worked very closely with our special needs teachers to ensure that all students in my class were given an equal opportunity to achieve their own personal best. I often used music and art as teaching tools in my class to help create a more stimulating and interesting environment for learning and to show the students that learning can be and is fun. I am proud to state that over twenty of my former students have become teachers and are currently teaching in the West Chester School District and several other districts, as well! I am presently teaching an art class for the Chester County Arts Assoc. The class that I teach is called Mommy and Me. During these sessions the children and I sing, I read a story and then we do an art activity. Most of the children that attend these sessions are between the ages of 2 to 6 years old. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was an Elementary teacher in the West Chester School District and taught First Grade for over eight years. During my early years, we used an excellent phonics based program called Open Court. I found that program to be very successful and used it to teach my own children how to read before entering First Grade.
