About Dane

I am a former actuary currently getting teacher certified in PA so that I can become a HS math teacher. I graduated magna cum laude from the State University of New York at Albany with a B.S. in Actuarial Science and minors in both English and Computer Science. Additionally, I was a National Merit Scholarship winner after scoring 1560 on my SAT (800 math, 760 verbal).

I have several years of experience tutoring HS math and helping kids prepare for standardized tests (SAT, ACT, and LSAT) with excellent results. I am very good at establishing a rapport with kids and creating an environment in which they are comfortable asking questions and being honest with me when they are confused --- which is CRUCIAL to the success of any tutor. I also have multiple ways to present all mathematical topics, so I can nearly always find an approach that makes sense to students that have struggled with the "standard" mathematics presentation.

In addition to providing excellent academic content, I am also able to teach students quick methods to evaluate the reasonableness of their answers and various methods to help them catch their arithmetic mistakes. Much of my success is due to the fact that I focus on making sure that my students have a conceptual understanding of whatever topic I'm presenting rather than simply teaching a process to solve a certain type of math question. Process-based instruction has its place and can be valuable in some cases, but that type of preparation generally does not enable students to handle many different varieties/types of questions. I do my best to prepare my students to apply their knowledge to types of questions that they may not have been exposed to yet.

Finally, I am a Director of the Daniel Boone Area School District School District and the Chair of the DBASD Curriculum & Instruction Committee, so I am confident that I am keeping up with the trends/challenges facing today's high school students. I had a successful professional/corporate career, but it is now time for me to give back to the community in the best way I know how : improving the achievement and self-confidence of PA students, our future leaders.

I can comfortably handle the material in any HS mathematics course, from pre-algebra through Calculus B/C. I can also handle a wide variety of undergraduate math courses, where I've had particular success teaching probability and statistics to students struggling with that material.

If your student requires support to handle any of the aforementioned topics, please contact me to discuss how I might help provide the assistance that your student needs. I respond to nearly all inquiries in three hours or less and my schedule is currently quite flexible, so please reach out to me to discuss how I might be able to help your student.

Thanks very much for your time and consideration, and I sincerely hope that you find a tutor that provides the support that your student needs --- whether that tutor is me or someone else. Be well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I scored a 36 on the ACT in 1986, and I have four years of experience teaching ACT prep class for Kaplan, including the English section. Not only can I help students master the exam content and teach them useful test-taking strategies, I can also make them much more comfortable with the entire standardized exam process.

Probability

I also scored an 800 on the math section of the SAT and a 36 on the ACT, proving that I mastered all of the math topics covered in high school.

Knowledgeable and patient!

Dane is an excellent tutor because he is taking the time to understand how my son approaches English and Math. After the first lesson, my son felt confident and I know this will help him take his ACTs. I have already suggested Dane to one of my neighbors!
