About Brandon

I am a teacher at heart. I spent four and a half years as an adjunct professor, during which time I learned how to motivate and instruct college students with varying degrees of interest and enthusiasm. My tenants for teaching are simple; be engaged, meet the student where they are, and over-communicate that each of us is capable with the right method.

I have learned, through the attainment of a dual degree in Accounting and Finance from Lehigh University that books can be dense and difficult to digest. It was there where I learned how to take words and numbers and create pictures and stories. This, consequently, allowed me to excel in my professional life while continuing to be in charge of more and more “training” in my various corporate roles. In my late 20s I obtained an MBA from Penn State University in Finance and have since gone on to receive a certification in Executive Management from Cornell University. It’s because I continue to learn that I am able and qualified to teach. I am both a coach and a player. I have excelled in math, writing and reading, in particular, while also becoming very strong in test preparation (GMATs, SATs, and GREs). These are skills I’ve learned to communicate to others with relative ease and enjoyment. When you tutor with me, both the journey and the destination prove valuable and enjoyable.

I currently work in finance management for a multi-billion dollar organization, and also own my own small business. It is that kind of versatility that has enabled me to help students learn to write business cases, understand problem solving from mathematics to writing, and put their thoughts down in an organized and concise manner. My work is mathematical in nature (Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus and all varying degrees of Algebra), though the reading and the writing inclinations come from my executive interaction. With me you will learn to write with grace and precision, while adhering to grammatical rule.

My methods are quite primitive; we are all learners and see the world through different lenses. I have discovered that by learning more about my students, I can better understand how they process information and, as a result, communicate that information. I have always been a strong standardized test taker, so in that regard I have taught myself tricks to empower stronger memory and better retention. When you tutor with me it is unique. I take a very different approach to learning than what is conventional. This is about how you see the world and understand your experience of it. My passion comes from seeing the development of others. So, it is watching others learn and grow that ultimately make me good at what I do.

Lastly, I am results driven. So, when you invest in me to invest in your child, you will always see a positive return. It’s how I measure myself, and how I understand success.

I will meet you where you are, and together we will achieve success and prepare for a future filled with opportunity.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a heavy undergraduate focus in Accounting and Finance, both of which required Calculus 1, 2 and 3. Building upon the aforementioned was a solid understanding of all math classes in middle school and high school. My current role is in high level finance, enabling me to both understand and communicate mathematics to be informational and understandable for a myriad of skill levels. My MBA was also in Finance, furthering my ability to broaden how I understand mathematics and communicate it.

Algebra 2

I spent 4.5 years as an adjunct professor teaching investment finance, personal finance, and corporate finance. The basic building blocks for all of this is algebra. The better you learn this topic, the more prepared you will be moving forward. I have a keen way of communicating that is very specific to how you learn.

Business

I am the owner of a small business in Harrisburg, Pa. Since taking ownership in mid-2013, I took 10 years of negative cash flow and turned a profit for the first time in 2015. I have also worked for 3 of the largest financial and retail firms in the US (and some, globally). I consult for small businesses and love to continue furthering my own education while grooming and developing employees. I also currently work for the largest retail grocer on the east coast and handle $3b of their current P&L.

Career Development

I spent 4 years as an adjunct professor teaching finance classes, including investment finance and corporate finance. I have a management certification from Cornell University, an MBA in Finance from PSU, and a dual degree in finance and accounting from Lehigh University. I have tutored several students in high school in the local community at the request of teachers to discuss business and marketing as I am a local small business owner. I have a very unique approach to teaching and a very successful track record in communicating complex topics to a myriad of different educational levels and skill sets.

English

I have been writing at the collegiate level and beyond for more than 20 years. I was placed in AP English and writing in my junior year of High School, and was offered a paid summer of study immediately after my freshman year at Lehigh University to pursue Creative Writing. I spent many of those semesters teaching others to write, and have since written many short stories and am in the midst of a novel co-authored by a PhD in Counseling. Writing, for me, is an art with specks of science sprinkled in.

Geometry

I spent 4.5 years as an adjunct professor teaching investment finance, personal finance, and corporate finance. The basic building blocks for all of this is algebra. The better you learn this topic, the more prepared you will be moving forward. I have a keen way of communicating that is very specific to how you learn. Please feel free to contact me with clarifying questions.

Marketing

I have owned a small business for the last 3.5 years and during that time have taken the role as owner and CEO. In small business, you must spend time negotiating, selling, and analyzing your market. Part of success in business is realizing that "marketing" is not a static concept, and is often evolved through constant research into social media, business networking, and so on. I have evolved the way this once "turn-key" business reaches its target audience and continues to develop its brand.

Microsoft Excel

I use the MS Office Suite so often in my day-to-day activities in management and presenting critical information to executives, that I have become proficient in most of what the suite has to offer, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I continue to enhance my skills beyond what most even know these programs have to offer. I enjoy teaching them to help others further develop their abilities to communicate with technology.

SAT Reading

My SAT Math and Writing scores were among the top in the nation when I took them back in 1997 as a Sophomore in High School. I have always been a strong standardized test taker. My abilities to find patterns in the questions and how the answers can be eliminated helped me perform at a strong level all throughout my academic career.

Writing

I have taught several classes as an adjunct professor, which involved research papers on everything from investment finance to macro and micro economics. This required students to analyze the world's climate in business and international policy and often created a need to help them distill their findings and write them in a concise manner.

I also started (finishing about half my Master's degree) in English at the University of Delaware.

I also have written several business articles and short stories and am currently in the midst of a novel.
