My name is Madgee P. and I am a Haitian American student, raised in Haiti. Back in Haiti, my parents wanted me to be able to freely communicate in French since it was the official language of the country. For that purpose, I went to French-speaking school for 10 years, where I learned multiple subjects in French.

In my junior year, however, my parents decided that it would be a great idea to now learn in English to get me ready for college. As stressful as I was back then about my performance in English, I did not have to be. At the end of my junior year, my first year in an American high school, I was nominated to join NHS which I did and stayed in until my last year of high school.

Since I grew up in Haiti with my parents that are also Haitian, I learned to speak not only French but also Creole which is the language spoken by most Haitians. I love to share my knowledge of different languages and cultures. I am now in college studying chemistry with a minor in French.

This love of science and culture brought me to participate in LEAP when I was a junior in high school. Leap is an organization of foreign doctors usually American doctors that come into Haiti to provide help to people that cannot pay for needed surgery. I volunteered to interpret information from the doctors to their patients and vice-versa. By doing this I created a comfortable environment for both the patient and the doctor. I enjoyed this volunteer experience so much that I figured I should continue in interpreting, translating, and tutoring.

I believe that categories are the best way to teach someone when they are first phased with a new language. Categories such as numbers, the alphabet, animals, careers, and other simple words. After learning words in general, sentence structure is the second step. Where the student is taught verbs and adjectives and how to use them to form a sentence. And lastly conversation.
