About Melanie

"Get over the idea that only children should spend their time in study. Be a student so long as you still have something to learn, and this will mean all your life." - Henry L. Doherty

Every day grants me new opportunities to learn from my students, colleagues, administrators, and other professionals. Through professional development sessions, classes, tutoring sessions, and daily experiences with my students, I can feel myself growing and improving as an educator. My students benefit from my love of learning on a daily basis as I include new ideas into our lessons. Throughout my years as an educator I realized the strong need for me to become more aware of strategies to differentiate my lessons to meet the individual needs of all my students. Through daily teaching and tutoring I am able to expand my toolbox of strategies and skills for elementary and middle school curriculums.

My love of teaching comes from a lifelong love of learning. As a magna cum laude graduate, I know that hard work and dedication can pay off. I have also learned that asking for help when needed is one of the best questions in the world. "Can you help me understand this?" is one of my favorite questions! I have successfully been answering this question for my classroom students and the students that I have tutored for the last 8 years. I specialize in math tutoring. Math is after all my favorite subject. I can create process charts, chants, acronyms, and other awesome ways to learn and remember skills off the top of my head. Although math is my favorite subject, I am available to tutor any of the core subjects for grades K-6.

I consider my tutoring sessions successful when my students are engaged and focused. I like to challenge my students to their instructional frustration level and not beyond. I feel that when students go beyond that level they loose their confidence and love for learning. I try to make learning as fun as I can while still staying focused on the goal!

I hold myself to a high standard and never want to see or hear that my students or their parents are unsatisfied with my tutoring. For this reason, I enjoy feedback whenever possible and would work with you to re-do a session if necessary.

I try to be as flexible as possible with time. I do ask for a 2 hour cancellation window. If a session is cancelled I offer make-up sessions as well.

To ensure a quiet and comfortable tutoring session, I suggest meeting at a local library. Or I can travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success with your studies!

I have taught and tutored Math for grades 3-8 for the last 8 years. Math has always been a passion of mine and my specialty. I can create unique and fun ways to learn and remember new skills.

I have helped my school district write their Common Core curriculum in the past and am able to break down skills to their base level. I can also start with the skill's pre-requisite skills and work my way back up to the main skill in the curriculum.

From teaching multiple grades for many years I am skilled at a variety of curriculums. I have many strategies to use when teaching different skills.

With my Masters in Special Education I have completed many classes that have prepared me for teaching students with multiple disabilities. I have taught students with learning disabilities as well as ADD/ADHD for the last eight years. Through this teaching I have mastered creating schedules that include a variety of activities to keep my students focused and moving while still working towards their goal.

I have been told that I am a fun and caring teacher. I work diligently planning lessons for each of my students to fit their individual needs. I am eager to hear from you and all about your interests to start planning your lessons and our time together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a MEd in Special Education from Towson University. I have taught students with ADD/ADHD for the past 8 years. I currently teach as a Special Education pull out resource teacher and service students with Other Health Impairments as well as Learning Disabilities.

Common Core

I have taught Common Core Math and Reading for the last 3 years in Baltimore City. I assisted in writing the BCPSS Common Core Math Curriculum 3 years ago. I also coordinated and administered multiple Professional Development sessions on Common Core Math to other Baltimore City Public School teachers.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught grades 3-8 for the past 8 years. I have tutored those same grades for the last 7 years. During this time I administered "Math Works" professional development sessions to BCPSS educators. I am certified to teach grades K-6 in both Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Friendly and Encouraging

Melanie was friendly and encouraging to my fourth grade son. She was enthusiastic about math and tailored his session to his learning style to ensure he understood. She asked for both my input and that of his teacher. Overall very pleased.
