Misericordia University (Elem Ed. and Sp. Ed.)
Hello Students and Parents!
My name is Miss Cara and I am a PA certified teacher in Elementary Education (PreK-4) and Special Education (PreK-8). Although my certification focuses on the education of Elementary and Middle school students, I have experience working with all ages. While attending school at Misericordia University, I regularly tutored university students in a variety of subjects.
Currently, I serve as a Special Education teacher at a private school for students aged 11-18 with emotional and behavioral difficulties.
I began tutoring as a result of my music background in piano. In high school and college, I offered private piano lessons to students of all ages. This early experience in tutoring helped me to make the decision to pursue a degree in Education. In the past few years, I have worked in Montessori school settings, learning support classrooms, life skills classrooms, and all grade levels of elementary school. I am the oldest of 4 children and have a sister with Down Syndrome who has given me great insight into working with students with disabilities.
I specialize in tutoring students in English, specifically reading and writing. Because of my background in Special Education, I have much experience helping students who struggle with phonics and decoding. Aside from English, which is my favorite to teach, I can also tutor students in any Elementary courses, including study skills and test preparation.
I am also available to tutor college students who are preparing for the PAPAs or Praxis tests.
English has always been my favorite subject- my forte if you will! I am one of those unfortunate people who actually enjoys proofreading papers.
I have taught English at all grade levels, including tutoring in the subject at a college level. Because of my certification in Special Ed., I have developed many effective strategies for helping students who struggle with English. No two students are the same and I make sure to differentiate my instruction and plan according to the individual's need.
If you need help preparing for the Education Praxis exams, I can definitely help you! Because the tests are lengthy and timed, students often panic and perform below their actual abilities. I can help you to get ready for the test and feel confident while taking it. We can work together on studying the content and I can guide you through some practice tests. I am certified in Early Childhood Education and Special Education, but could also assist students preparing to take a different level of the test.
I have taught a variety of Elementary grade levels, from toddler students in a Montessori program up to 6th grade. I absolutely love working with Elementary students and try to find exciting and fun ways to present material. If you need just a bit of extra help in a subject, I can help you build some great study skills so that you can succeed to the very best of your ability. For students who need more intensive tutoring, I have some effective strategies that I know will work. It is hard to write specifics at the moment since each student is different and I like to assess him/her individually and in person.
I am certified in Special Education and currently work as a Sp. Ed. teacher at a private school. In the past, I have worked in learning support classrooms and life skills classrooms. I have acted as a private caretaker for an adolescent student with Autism, an experience that helped me develop some very effective strategies to use with this population. I also have a sister with Down Syndrome and she has allowed me to view learning in a very special way. Because of her, I have great patience and creativity when it comes to helping students with Special Needs succeed, both academically and in the real world. I have learned that a diagnosis is only a small part of a person and that everyone can become a great learner, just in their own unique way.
I tutored in American History at a University level.
I look forward to hearing from students who are interested in my tutoring services! Instead of providing specifics about rates/availability/meeting locations on this website, please email me so that we can talk more personally. I look forward to working with all of my future "tutees" and, once I know your names, I promise I will not refer to you as such! If you would like to contact me to discuss rates, availability, location, etc., please do not hesitate to email me!
Thank you for taking the time to read my profile and I hope to talk with you soon!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
