My name is Karen and I am a first grade teacher in a local school district. I have a master's degree in elementary education and I am certified in reading. I have taught sixth grade for 9 years, second grade for one year and first grade in this district since 2007.
I teach math, reading, language arts, science, and social studies K-4. I have experience in teaching Fundations at the first grade level and also kid-writing. Learning should be fun and engaging to students. I thoroughly enjoy working with children and watching them flourish. I enjoy getting to know a student first to understand their learning styles and invite the parent to observe sessions to learn strategies that can be used at home.
I tutor at the Back Mountain Memorial Library in Dallas or the Hoyt Library in Kingston.

First lesson with Karen went great! Mason is excited to see her next week. We worked on letter sounds and word recognition.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been an elementary teacher since 1997, teaching grades 6, 2, and 1. I have taught all subjects: math, reading, science, social studies, and language arts from grades K-4. I taught sixth grade English for 9 years and co-taught sixth grade reading during that time as well.
I obtain a master's degree in education with a reading certificate. I have been teaching first grade since 2007 and am experienced in everyday teachings of phonics with the whole class. I am also experienced in small group guided reading and RTII (response to intervention) working with children who need support in phonics.
