About Cristy

Bio

I am a Reading Specialist with additional certifications in K-6 Elementary Education, and Special Education, and Orton-Gillingham. I have been teaching and tutoring students since 2010. I believe reading instruction and intervention is essential, without a strong literacy foundation students often struggle across the curriculum. I am a Reading Specialist with additional certifications in K-6 Elementary Education, and Special Education, and Orton-Gillingham. I have been teaching and tutoring students since 2010. I believe reading instruction and intervention is essential, without a strong literacy foundation students often struggle across the curriculum. As an Elementary Reading Specialist I have the opportunity to work with small groups of students through out the day. I also plan and develop curriculum, provide professional development, and supervising Reading Specialist Interns. Other experience includes teaching 8th grade reading, 5th grade math, and supervising leaders and campers at a Pre-K-5 summer camp program.

I am confident that my experience as a reading specialist, a reading teacher, and special education teacher has provided me with the knowledge necessary to assist your child or children in expanding or developing the skills necessary to be successful in and out of the classroom. My Phonics Lessons often include First Sounds Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation, Rhyming, Word Building, or Making Words. Effective reading instruction and interventions should be tailored to meet the needs of each individual child. To determine a student’s strengths and weaknesses in Phonics a variety of measures are used, including Boyd Test of Phonemic Ability and Bear's Spelling Inventory. The results from these measures are used to determine which phonics interventions are necessary to help each student succeed.

After I became a Reading Specialist, I realized that even with my advanced certification there were still students who struggled. I wanted to be able to help all students, so I went back to school and earned my Special Education Certification. Last summer I taught in a Special Education Classroom.
