About James

Hello,

My name is Jim. I have a graduate degree from the American University in Cairo (Egypt) as well as a B.A from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. I am a highly trained tutor, with years of experience teaching SAT, ACT, and other test prep; English, writing, and other fields of the humanities; and the following foreign languages: Arabic, French, German, and Spanish, which I both tutor in the afternoons, and am substitute teach at several Main Line private schools.

My primary specialty is test prep - I have helped many students achieve their goals in the SATs, ACTs, ASVAB, and other examinations, as my testimonials will attest. There is always room for tremendous improvement, and it is the task of the educator to guide students to unlocking the tools and knowledge of every subject. While I have a graduate degree in English and Comparative Literature in Translation - and have worked as a translator in the past - most of my teaching is test prep, and we always see results.

As mentioned above, I am a linguist and experienced tutor for German (advanced), French (advanced), Arabic (upper intermediate), and Spanish (beginner to intermediate). I have tutored students in all of these subjects, and am frequently called to substitute teach in foreign language departments.

I taught ESL/ESOL in Europe for almost a decade, and can also help students reach their goals in English, writing, history, and about any course in the Humanities (except music). I teach at Mathnasium in Rosemont, and can tutor students in all Algebra courses, Geometry, and most other mathematics.

My wife, infant son, and I live in Conshohocken, and I am available to teach throughout the Main Line and surrounding environs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I studied Arabic at the American University in Cairo and the American University in Beirut while living in the Middle East. Upon returning home, I successfully completed an advanced program at Middlebury College's prestigious Arabic program. I am qualified to teach the language in MSA and Egyptian Colloquial. Should further qualifications be required of me, please let me know.

I scored a 99 on the ASVAB with a 140 GT (General Technical) score.

I am hoping to start working on my M.A in French either this summer or next.
