Cabrini College (Enrolled)
Hi. I have recently completed graduate classes in the reading specialist program at Cabrini College and am anxious to apply my skills. For the past 4 years, I have been a volunteer Literacy Council tutor working with an adult male struggling reader. We have made progress using the Magic Tree House Series books in his fluency, word recognition and confidence as a reader. In 2010, I worked with an Asian middle school student who was in the United States for 1 year. Each week I met with him and reviewed homework and study skills.
As a tutor, I will assess my student's strengths and weaknesses as well as provide an interest survey to determine their hobbies. This will help me to prepare lessons that will be tailored to their needs and interests. Each student is unique in their ability to learn and deserves the best possible lessons. I have many resources at home including text books, cd's and both elementary and middle school books. I look forward to meeting and working with new WyzAnt students. Hi. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been working with an Asian middle school student for the past year and a half both in person and over the phone (he is now back in Korea). I have helped him with homework, speaking skills, word recognition and fluency skills. He has gained confidence in his English skills. In addition, I have helped him with pronunciation, vocabulary and synonyms to the unknown words.
I have taken two phonics graduate education classes recently and have spent teaching phonics to my adult struggling reader weekly. Some activities we have worked on include phonics/consonant cluster bingo, word extensions, word walls, and finding words within a word.
