I have a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, where I researched statistical probability models of medical diagnosis. After that I worked for a small research and development company, leading projects focused on preventive health and automated cancer diagnosis. I've always felt comfortable with math and enjoy uncovering the ways that formulas and data interact. I especially appreciate statistics and biostatistics, which can give us a glimpse into how nature works under the hood and can advise us on the best steps to take to protect our health and improve our lives.

Before coming to Wyzant I taught in night school and have tutored statistics and math from algebra through calculus locally for several years. I'm not a big fan of rote, cookie-cutter, "same-for-everyone," approaches and see the challenge of tutoring as being flexible and patient enough to find the best analogy to explain to each student how and why particular formulas or equations work best for solving particular types of problems. When tutoring math and statistics, I hope that I can help others see the same underlying truth and beauty that I do. Thanks for reading.

Statistics

Statistics

I took courses in both statistics and test and measurement theory as an undergrad at Brandeis University and continued with more statistics coursework as a grad student at the University of Pennsylvania. For my dissertation I researched statistical and probabilistic models of medical diagnosis. More recently I've been using biostatistics to help build mobile preventive health apps. I've tutored students in statistics courses using SPSS and StatCrunch and have expertise in the statistical programming language R. Earlier this year I helped a nurse manager who was returning to complete her Bachelor's in nursing get an A in her online Statistics class.

Algebra 2

As an undergraduate at Brandeis University I took three semesters of calculus, plus other advanced math in the computer science department. I received an 800 on my SAT Math Level II, which tests knowledge of Algebra 2, Precalculus, and Trigonometry. I've tutored math locally, algebra through calculus, for several years alongside my wife, who has been tutoring for 16 years. I've also put together a collection of Algebra II study sheets to help explain concepts to students.

I recommend that Precalculus students check out the manga-inspired book "Who Is Fourier? A Mathematical Adventure" for a gentle introduction to trigonometry and trigonometric identities, complex numbers and powers of i, vectors, and exponential and logarithmic functions.

I took courses in both statistics and test and measurement theory as a psych undergrad at Brandeis University and continued with more advanced statistics in grad school at the University of Pennsylvania. I branched into studying Biostatistics to help me model probabilistic reasoning in medical diagnosis for my doctoral dissertation. I learned more Biostatistics while working at a research and development company, where I led teams building a preventive health advisory expert system and automated software for cancer diagnosis. I'm also currently using Biostatistics to help me design mobile preventive health apps. Biostatistics textbooks I've tutored from include Basic Biostatistics by Gerstman, Intuitive Biostatistics by Motulsky, and Fundamentals of Biostatistics by Rosner. In the summer of 2018 I helped a student pursuing a Master's in Global Health get an A in her online Biostatistics Class.

Nice, informative teacher

He figured out that my son had rote basic memory problems with algebra II...would use him again! As his mother, I was happy to finally understand what his issues were.

Good experience

Very patient and and prepared in helping student get a clearer understanding of Algebra 2 concepts. Let the student lead the session and answered any questions.

Janina, 1 lesson with Stan

Knowledgeable and patient

Was able to simplify terms and processes. Was patient with my multiple questions. Was very knowledgeable regarding statistics and can communicate it on my level.
