Being a teacher has always been my profession of choice. I have a career which spans over 20 years in education, serving and such capacities as: tutor, mentor, teacher, advocate, administrator and educational consultant. My experience has provided me with opportunities to work with students and parents from rural, suburban, urban, and city communities. My work in these areas have decrease student retention, raised state assessment scores, and increased graduation percentages. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have received training through the Pennsylvania Department of Education on curriculum writing and aligning district curriculum to the common core standards. I have been a part of this process in three school districts with dramatic variances in population and state description: suburban (12,000 / AYP / safe school / wealthy / school board run), urban (8,000 / No AYP / unsafe school / poor / state run), city (18,000 / No AYP / border unsafe school / dual local & state control). I have led professional development seminars on the Common Core. I have team-taught with my K-5 teachers, using the Common Core, and assisted them in employing better instructional practices to maximize student comprehension.
I served as a PreK-8 elementary principal. I have working knowledge of the curriculum and Common Core changes for every grade. I researched and made final decisions for all materials and ancillaries. I have experience teaching in each classroom, in every grade, on a weekly basis. My students reading and math scores increased and we were the number one elementary in my school district (Pennsylvania State School Profile).
As an elementary administrator, I gained daily training, from my teaching staff, during the handwriting portion of our curriculum. I led / team-taught several handwriting lessons grades K-5. I have researched and practiced various techniques (from beginner formulation of each letter to script penmanship). I received personal training and critiquing from professional calligraphers.
I satisfactorily completed undergraduate communications coursework at West Chester University. I was invited to deliver the benediction speech for DelCo Allied Health Program School of Nursing. I was chosen to represent the West Chester Area SD for the Presidential Blue Ribbon Award. I have been a chosen presenter for The Pennsylvania State Education Association, the National Education Association, Southeast Region (Chester / Delaware County public schools), and at various professional development summits within PA and NJ.
