About Adriana

I am a native of Colombia, a country that is known in Latin America as a source of well-spoken Spanish, have taught all ages from preschool to seniors over more than 30 years, and always enjoy teaching the language. Over the last ten years, I have taught university students primarily.

In my classes, I add many real-life examples to my lessons (current news, popular music, movies, well-known personalities) to make the language relevant and not simply a school subject. My passion is evident to my students. I am very conscientious about showing students correct grammar and enable them to progress as much as possible, while at the same time I am very patient and I have the ability to explain Spanish language concepts so that my students understand them easily. When I tutor, I take great interest in the student and their particular circumstances to customize the learning experience for them, and have assisted many Spanish learners over the years, from police officers to journalists as well as all grade levels from preschool to university. All of the traits that distinguish my classroom teaching apply to the tutoring setting: proper grammar, patience, real-life examples, and a passion for enabling students to succeed. While I have studied many teaching methods and have incorporated many of these principles into my teaching, I never allow the method to supersede the learning needs of the student. For example, while I will strive to give my lessons in Spanish as much as possible, I will explain a difficult concept in English if I believe that it is the most effective way for that student in that situation.

While I will use the resources that are available in a student's textbook, I do not restrict myself to the textbook and have many sources of information to draw on, as well as my own experience as a native speaker. I understand the various ways that Spanish is spoken in Spain and different parts of Latin America, and can help the student tell the difference between standard Spanish and a regional expression that is not used universally. There are also times when a student will say a Spanish phrase in a way that, while grammatically correct, is not commonly used, and I will take the time to explain how that particular idea is normally expressed. I encourage students to use Spanish as a vehicle to express aspects of their lives that are important to them, and so make the language come alive as a means of communication. In my own life, I am well aware of how my children have benefited from being fully fluent in Spanish in their careers and personal lives, and the knowledge and satisfaction of this success come through loud and clear to all the students I teach. As Charlemagne said, "To have another language is to possess a second soul."

Native Spanish speaker from Colombia, degree in education. Tutoring at all levels; adult individual and group instruction; college-level teaching at Drexel University, University of Pennsylvania, and St. Joseph's University; and teaching at private schools from preschool to eighth grade. Have attended many teacher workshops and have access to a wide network of language instructors to stay current in my field.

I can help you achieve your goals in learning and excelling in Spanish. Contact me for more details about my philosophy of teaching, my experience and teaching methods, and scheduling.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Spanish

I am a native Spanish speaker with 30 years Spanish teaching experience at all levels from preschool and primary school to university and adult education. I focus on communication and comprehension, with solid foundation in grammar. I have a special emphasis on using language in real-life situations, and providing many examples from the contemporary Spanish-speaking world to supplement lessons and make the language come alive for learners.
