About Lauren

I am a scientific illustrator and mathematician. With that unusual combination, I've spent a lot of my life explaining math to art people and art to math people. The stereotype that artists don't do math well doesn't apply to me, but it has given me a lot of experience in finding new ways to explain and teach math and science for people who think differently. This is especially useful for students who don't like math or are having trouble in the transitional math subjects like algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. This carries over to the sciences, especially chemistry, which is heavily algebra-based.

I have a B.S. in Mathematics from Arcadia University and I tend toward more rule-based and algebraic math. I can tutor for any middle to lower level college math classes and any high school math classes. My B.A. in Scientific Illustration came with heavy coursework in biology and some in chemistry and botany. I love all kinds of science, including physics and chemistry. This wide range of knowledge lets me draw on many examples and modes of thinking, so that I can connect concepts for my students. Many times, all a student needs to solve a problem or understand a concept is the right way to think about it. I like to use drawings, diagrams, and physical models in my teaching because I find that many students respond better to something they can see or touch.

As an artist, I paint with acrylic and watercolor paints. I draw with pen and ink, graphite, and charcoal. I work digitally and can tutor the use of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I am a professional artist; I teach workshops and sell my art. I have spent plenty of time learning and analyzing the different parts and pieces of an image, from anatomy to composition to color, and can easily teach and critique.

Throughout my life, I've been working with computers and helping the people around me. I teach people of all ages how to use Windows and Macintosh computers and their common programs, like Microsoft Office. I also teach basic tasks like using the internet, sending emails, and installing programs.

I am available to tutor most days of the week, but my schedule fills up quickly. I work with students at their houses, at public spots like libraries, and in my own home. I am also available for online tutoring. I prefer to tutor in one or two hour blocks, as I find that most students start to lose focus after about two hours. I am willing to travel up to half an hour to meet with my students. Potential students who are farther away are welcome to meet me halfway or can pay an extra fee for me to travel to them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Illustrator

I work with Adobe Illustrator to create charts, diagrams, and images for myself and for professional work. I've been working with this program since 2009. I also use it to make technical blueprints for 3D modeling and laser-cutting.

B.S. in Mathematics, B.A. in Scientific Illustration, Arcadia University

Adobe Photoshop is my most used image tool. I use it to edit my photographs and scanned images, to create diagrams, and to make images from scratch. I am very familiar with Adobe Photoshop and can work in any version from 7.0 to CS6 to CC.

B.S. in Mathematics, B.A. in Scientific Illustration, Arcadia University

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is one of my most tutored subjects. As the first real introduction into many higher math concepts, it's essential that students understand Algebra 1. I can explain the concepts using many different methods. Since every student learns differently, it's necessary to individualize the explanations so that the student can understand the material. I am used to bridging those gaps.

As an illustrator I frequently use diagrams and drawings to help my students understand the essential concepts of botany.

I have earned a B.S. in Mathematics, B.A. in Scientific Illustration, Arcadia University.

Calculus

I took AP Calculus BC in high school and continued my education with Calculus at college. One of the advantages of learning higher level math (such as differential equations and real analysis) is that it gives you a much better perspective of the basic math and the underlying structure and foundation. I use this deeper understanding to help teach my students and figure out where their difficulties are.

B.S. in Mathematics, B.A. in Scientific Illustration, Arcadia University

Chemistry

Chemistry is essential to understanding biology and other sciences, but it's often a stumbling block for students. Chemistry is heavy on both memorization and math. A good working understanding of algebra is essential, and as a math tutor, I am well qualified to help with mathematical concepts.
