In both personal and professional experiences, I’ve been privileged to blend two of my passions—teaching and writing—with my love for children. While raising my own two kids in south-central Pennsylvania, I chose to work at home as a freelance editor and ghostwriter for 20 years (assisting various publishers and authors, writing adult and children’s literature). At the same time, I became heavily involved with teaching many children of all ages. My responsibilities, both paid and volunteer, included serving as a preschool music instructor (ages 2 to 5), private piano teacher (all ages), a children’s music director (ages 2 to 6th grade), children’s church director (ages 2 to 6th grade), homeschool teacher (ages 3 to 10), and volunteer tutor (via Boys & Girls Club and church organizations). I likewise assisted high school and college students with essay-writing and scholarship applications. Moreover, before I started my own family, I was employed four years as a Recruitment and Training Coordinator, orienting and training up to 530 employees within a state-government facility and worked another four years as a Volunteer Director, in which I recruited a number of individuals and groups, both children and adults, matching their interests and abilities to the residents of a nursing home.
At the beginning of 2019, I enjoyed working five months as a substitute teacher for Washington County, Maryland schools, assisting at 26 different locations (elementary through high school). Subsequently, during the 2019-20 school year, I was privileged to accept a six-month elementary-school assignment, where I tutored individual students as well as groups of two to three children with special needs. Each hour, I would move to another one of seven classrooms (grades K-5 to 4th) and assist with reading and writing assignments, science or math lessons. I also enjoyed participating in the after-school program, playing the piano and teaching songs to children of all ages.
