About Melinda

I have a Ph.D. in communications as well as an MA in composition and rhetoric, so if you need help with writing or communicating, I'm your tutor. I have been teaching communications for many years, but I also teach African American history and literature, technical writing, research methodology, and public speaking. I know American history well, as well as such things as government functions and Media Law and Ethics.

Besides working for various universities and colleges, I have worked for a couple of public policy organizations and as a baker. I have a child in high school and have helped her prepare for the SSAT (an SAT for 8th graders), as well as for AP exams in history and civics. I have also worked for several years both as an online and in-person tutor for students. I know lots of great resources for helping students do well and to better understand assignments and to prepare for tests.

Finally, I appreciate the struggles that people from other cultures have in doing well in a language that is not the one they grew up with. I know a bit of Spanish and French, have studied foreign cultures, and have even taught intercultural communication. I welcome the opportunity to meet people from around the world as well as from around the corner.

Besides as master's degree in teaching composition and rhetoric, I have many years' experience helping students in my courses to write better, but I have also taught many different kinds of writing courses, from basic writing, to freshman composition, technical writing, and business writing. I received at 730/800 on the GRE Verbal Test for graduate school. I have a Bachelor's in French literature and culture, and I also currently teach African American literature at the college level. Because of my background in rhetoric, I can offer students practical strategies for writing successful short essays for college exams.

My dissertation was a historical study of U.S. government films and publications about race and civil rights from 1953-1976. I had to know American history, foreign policy, film analysis, and African American history to be able to complete this dissertation successfully. Two chapters of the dissertation were published in academic journals, and my research has been cited in many other works on film, U.S. history, and race. I have also taught African American history at the University level for the past 5 years, which encompasses the entire history of the colonies and the United States to the present time. Because of my research in communications, I also have a strong background in how technology and the legal/regulatory systems have changed public discourse and representation over the past 150 years.

Most of all, I have the soul of a teacher -- I want to help and to engage with you where YOU are. How can I help solve the problems you are facing? How can I show you how best to use resources on the Internet for your work? How can I put ideas into a context that will make sense for you? Finally, how can I help you to get what you want to say into print or into a speech or presentation that will give you a good grade.

Contact me and find out more about how I can help. Let's schedule a preliminary lesson to see if what I can offer is what you need.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

My dissertation was on the use of American propaganda during the Cold War. The subject matter I addressed was the presentation of race and civil rights issues in this propaganda used by the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Information Agency. I have also studied and taught African American history and culture, from the Colonial times to the present. In doing so, I've become familiar with the literature, laws, and cultural representations of African Americans.

Literature

My own background in literature comes from a Bachelor's in French, where I read many classics in that language. In addition, I studied English and American literature and theory in graduate school. Most recently, I have been teaching early and modern African American literature at the University level. My approach tends to focus on the historical backgrounds in which the literature was written, as well as a close textual analysis. Although I have studied many literary theories, the ones that make the most sense to me are Critical Studies and Marxist Studies to see how the literature reflects, upholds, or challenges the people and institutions with power.

SAT Reading

I have a master's degree in Composition and Rhetoric, plus a doctorate in communications. I know how to read for meaning, for the arguments, for the use of persuasion, and for effect. I can help you find metaphors, similes, allusions, hyperbole, analogies, and the rhetorical figures of speech such as metonymy, synechdoche, and anaphora. I can help you understand point of view, time compression and expansion, and the historical context in which you are reading a work.

As an active reader myself, I also can explain political, social and scientific writings and how to decipher their meanings on an SAT test.

SAT Writing

I have always been a strong writer, but having been taught how to teach writing gives me the edge in helping students prepare for SAT writing. I can help you to quickly develop a thesis and argument strategies, as well as to outline a paper to move smoothly from introduction to conclusion.

My own GRE Score for English was 730/800, so i can also help students with vocabulary, analogies, definitions, and other skills that will make the SAT Writing test much easier to do.

Writing

I have a Master's Degree in Composition and Rhetoric, which has given me the opportunity to teach many different writing classes, public speaking courses, and topics relating to the use of argumentation strategies.

I am particularly strong at helping students understand the structure of paragraphs as the basis for their writing.

From composition, to literature and history, to research methodology, I can help students prepare cogent and well-organized papers.
