Graduate of University of Miami (Psychology)
Monmouth College (MEd)
My name is Bruce. I graduated with a M.Ed and Special Education certification from Monmouth College in 1994. I also have a B.A in Psychology from the University Of Miami Florida. After graduation from Monmouth, I was employed as a special education teacher for a school that specialized in students with emotional disabilities. This position allowed me to differentiate instruction by incorporating hands on activities, visuals, and experiential learning by taking these students on a variety of field trips outside of the building. This experience helped me understand that all students can learn a concept, it just depends on how it is presented. I have been employed over the past 14 years as a special education teacher and currently a coordinator at an urban charter school in Wilmington Delaware.
I have had the opportunity to be trained in Wilson Reading, which is a phonemic awareness program helping students identify letter/sounds and segment words to read both fluently and accurately. It also builds vocabulary by utilizing visualizing and verbalizing words, sentences and stories as students read. I have also been trained in Lindamood Bell, which emphasizes the use of visualizing and verbalizing to build comprehension skills. In terms of math instruction, I have always taught a step by step approach and have used a multi-sensory approach as well as applying real life situations to apply concepts. Many students have a fear of math, however, once they understand the steps and the process, it becomes easier. I also believe in repetition so the student retains the information and truly understands the concept being taught.
I have also had prior tutoring experience. I have worked independently as well as with private tutoring services which enabled me to build positive learning relationships with students and be more of a coach than a tutor. In my opinion, if you can build confidence that in turn will help to build success and the ability to learn and process information to work independently.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to share my information with you. Please feel free to contact me if you feel I can be of help.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
