About Jim

I've been fascinated by foreign languages and foreign cultures all my life. I majored in German in college, and then went on to get a PhD in Russian. I was a professor of Russian at the University of Missouri for 31 years. I love to travel in foreign countries, and give art lectures on cruise ships.

Now that I'm an Emeritus Professor, I've had the chance to share my love of languages by giving ESL tutoring to a number of mature professionals who have come to America to work. In that capacity, I've worked with native speakers of German, Spanish, Hungarian, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. I have developed ESL modules on topics that are sometimes overlooked, such as the differences between British and American English, phrasal verbs, and higher-level vocabulary items. I have recently written several articles on innovative methods for foreign language teaching.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Architecture

I have a PhD from Columbia University and was a professor at the University of Missouri for 31 years. I lectured on art and architecture and took special courses on those subjects. I give lectures on art and architecture as a Destination Speaker for a cruise line. I have also given many presentations at retirement communities on the architecture of the many countries that I have visited.

Public Speaking

During the 31 years when I taught at the University of Missouri I won numerous teaching awards. As an Emeritus Professor I created and delivered "Energizing the Room," a workshop that shows people how to apply presentation skills to PowerPoint. I have given many presentations to retirement communities, and also serve as a Destination Speaker for a cruise line.

To put it simply, I an one of those people who was put on earth to do public speaking. The only thing I enjoy more than public speaking is coaching others to become better public speakers.

Russian

I have a PhD in Russian from Columbia University and was a professor of Russian at the University of Missouri, where I won numerous teaching awards, for 31 years. I speak, read, and write Russian fluently. I have visited Russia many times.
