About Robert

I studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and minored in Chemistry and Petroleum Engineering. Over the course of my studies I met tons of professors and like any other student had some I liked much more than others. The professors who actually cared about the students and wanted to make sure that their students were learning tended to be the one's that I had the most success with. I realized that taking that approach to teaching and making sure the students actually understand the material they are learning makes all the difference.

I would tutor high school students from my area that needed help in math or science in my free time and the more I learned from my own teachers the better I was at implementing those teaching techniques with my students. Whether I am tutoring a group of students or I am working one on one with a student I like to start things off by breaking down the topics we are going to cover with the students. I like to draw or write things out so the students can visualize what is happening. Once the students have an idea of what they are learning and why it is important it becomes a lot easier to learn the material and apply it on a test or other assignment. After establishing a solid foundation and understanding of the material each student's needs become a lot more apparent and allows me to cater each session to the needs of the student.

I have two years of experience tutoring high school and middle school and even some college students in math (pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus) and science (chemistry, biology, and physics). I worked directly with students in one on one and group settings. Some of my students had an adequate understanding of the material and just wanted to do some work outside of class to make sure they were on top of their work, but other students needed to start from scratch and learn everything.

I held tutoring as often as the students needed it and really became invested in these student's performance in school. The satisfaction I would get from helping my students succeed is what drew me to tutoring in the first place. In addition to the Math and Science courses I have helped students with I also have some experience helping students with test prep for the SAT or ACT.

I want my students to succeed in school and I want them to be in a position where they are set up for future success. I understand that helping people learn stretches beyond just the classroom. Helping students develop their study and problem solving skills will help them accomplish things throughout their entire life. I welcome any resources students or parents want to provide, whether it be a study guide for class or an old exam, because all students needs are different and having an idea of what they are tested on helps me create effective study plans. I am very easy to reach and am willing to be flexible when it comes to scheduling. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have tutored around 10 students in the past in Algebra 2 and they all succeeded in the class.

Chemical Engineering

I studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. I think I would do well tutoring thermodynamics or even a foundations of chemical engineering class but not the higher level stuff. Also any petroleum classes would work well for me as I have taken several of them.

Chemistry

Have taught High school and college chemistry

SAT Math

I have experience using diagnostic tests to find out problem areas for students on the SAT math sections tested. Once strengths and weaknesses are determined I move forward practicing similar problems and the best way to approach them.
