About Andrea

I have nearly twenty years of high school classroom experience in English/Language Arts, and I have worked with students of all ability levels.

While I am able to work with students on specific assignments for current classes, I am also able to work with students on more open-ended goals--getting better at reading and writing, improving vocabulary, preparing for standardized tests, approaching the classroom and school with a positive attitude, goal-setting and planning for college and career.

I am certified in Secondary English (7-12) in Pennsylvania, and I also have classroom experience in South Carolina and Maryland. I am not a certified reading teacher, but I have taught classes in strategic reading for students who have a hard time with textbooks and nonfiction selections. I am currently enrolled in a Special Education Master's Program, and I have provided instruction and support for students with a variety of learning challenges including ADD/ADHD, sensory issues, executive function weaknesses, and learning disabilities affecting reading and writing. My test prep experience includes TOEFL, ASVAB, SAT, ACT and GED.

(Update 9/15/16: If you need ASVAB test prep and can work online, I would like to offer you a special $15/hour rate to show my appreciation for the path of service and sacrifice you are choosing.)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

With nearly 20 years of classroom experience, I have worked with numerous students who experienced learning challenges. Students with ADD and ADHD can be tremendously successful when they learn to monitor their attention and adapt their learning strategies to the demands of specific situations and environments.

ASVAB

Each ASVAB prep student needs a different approach. Some students need a review of content, vocabulary, and basic math skills. Some students need help learning to manage the clock. Some students already have a preliminary score and just need some brushing up. Other students have no idea where to start. Regardless of where you are right now, I am confident we can work together to move forward.

ESL/ESOL

In both the classroom setting and through private tutoring, I have worked with students from very diverse backgrounds. I have a very relaxed teaching style, and most students feel comfortable speaking with me to practice and to ask questions. My tutoring is customized to the student's goals and needs; some of my students wanted to become more confident communicators, while others were focusing on academic requirements like the TOEFL and college admissions process. I am able to provide instruction and strategies to help with reading, writing and speaking.

Reading

Using a reading apprenticeship model and proficient reading strategies, I have developed and taught courses in academic literacy for high school students.

Special Needs

I am currently enrolled in a Special Education Master's Program. During my twenty years of high school classroom experience, I have had the opportunity to teach many students with IEP's or 504 plans to address mild-to-moderate learning challenges, including ADHD, ADD, Sensory Processing Disorder, and Comprehension/Expression issues. I am very skilled in helping students to find ways to study and learn that work for them.

Writing

With twenty years of classroom experience, I have had the opportunity to work with student writers of all descriptions: advanced and limited, eager and reluctant, one-draft maximum and three-draft minimum. Every writer is unique, but every writer deserves to have his or her process respected and voice heard.

I have taught full classes in academic reading and writing, and all of my juniors and seniors were required to write multiple responses to the Common Application Essay topics available for that school year. We work through the writing process from idea generation, drafting and organizing, through revising and editing, to create a final product that meets the requirements of the task and the needs of the reader.
