About Veronica

Hello! My name is Veronica E., and I'm looking forward to working with you! I first started tutoring physics privately in high school, and began working in earnest through college while earning a bachelor's in physics at Carnegie Mellon University.

I started tutoring in my sophomore year, beginning again with physics and expanding into math and computer science. At the same time, I worked as a course assistant for the introductory programming course, which involved one-on-one, small group, and class-size teaching. I've tutored many subjects with many students, and have developed the techniques necessary to determine what approach is best for each individual student.

All this is to say that I have a lot of experience in a lot of tutoring scenarios. It's always interesting to see how different students approach the same problem, and is a fun challenge to tailor my teaching style to work with them, instead of just spouting the same boilerplate responses and hoping something sticks. In science and math fields especially, there is often a moment where a concept clicks-the lightbulb goes on, and the student just "gets" whatever problem they were working on. It's always a privilege to see that happen, and very gratifying when I can contribute to it.

Math and science have a reputation for being difficult, and in some ways it's well deserved. They build on themselves, so if one concept is not quite solid, it can be very hard to learn further topics. My approach is to break complicated concepts into their fundamental parts, to ensure actual understanding. The team leader for Academic Development at CMU (basically my tutor tutor) had a saying- "We're working toward our own obsolescence." I want to help you develop the skills you need to be successful on your own, to really, truly understand math and science.

I have a minor in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon, so I am strongly qualified in all of calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and discrete mathematics. I have been tutoring in physics since my senior year of high school, a year after my first class. In the course of my bachelor's, I have taken classes from astrophysics to quantum, mechanics to electrostatics, thermodynamics to optics. I'm experienced in almost all of the main divisions of physics, and I'm ready to help solve problems in any of them.

On a more practical, quantifiable note, I was a National Merit Scholar and had exemplary ACT and SAT scores, so if you're just looking for someone who can help you through those tests, I can certainly fit the bill. But if you want to go deeper into the subjects, to understand them so that you can go farther, then that is where I shine.

I'm an absolute nerd for math and science; I'm honestly very enthusiastic about them! I know they can be a bit intimidating, so I love helping people demystify the concepts, and making them seem a little more approachable. I've got very flexible hours, and am open to negotiations about any of my policies. The only exception is that I always meet in a public place, like a library or coffee shop (I love that free Wi-Fi!). That is, unfortunately, not negotiable.

I'm still establishing myself outside of the formal tutoring system from college, so I'm charging very little for my qualifications and experience. I look forward to meeting with you and working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Math

I had exemplary SAT scores, on both the main test and the SAT Math Subject test.

Trigonometry

I have taken trigonometry, and in the course of learning and using physics, I have applied these skills often.

Very knowledgable and flexible tutor

Veronica is helping my daughter with SAT prep. Because of my daughter's schedule, she only had time in the evenings on the weekends to do SAT prep. Veronica was very flexible and accommodating with her time and tailoring the tutoring to my daughter's needs. Highly recommend her.
