Lebanon Valley College (English)
Greetings! I'm Daniel - I have a broad-based bachelor's degree in English (communications concentration) and have worked in the field of journalism for nearly six years. That field requires precise knowledge of grammar, and I have also successfully completed college grammar courses. My knowledge of English literature is wide-ranging through extensive college courses and a personal love of reading. That's why literature, grammar and journalism are my three areas of tutoring!
I am good at explaining difficult concepts in an understandable way - in fact, that's one of my favorite things about being a journalist! I believe the best way to teach a concept involves a balanced approach that includes both direct instruction and providing guidance in allowing a student to solve a problem him or herself. I have a highly flexible personal work schedule and am easy to get along with. I am competent in the subjects I tutor but also understand that English can be challenging, so I know how to avoid potential pitfalls that may develop. I look forward to working with you! Greetings! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was an honors student in American History in high school and a student in American History in college, achieving top grades in almost all classes. I continue to love American History and read biographies, war chronicles, and other history books regularly. I also mentored peers in completing history assignments in college.
I have always been a lover and supporter of grammar. I believe grammar is more than just a set of silly rules; the rules have purposes that allow the reader to more easily comprehend the thoughts of the writer. I completed intensive grammar courses while obtaining my English degree at Lebanon Valley College from 2006-2010, and often helped my classmates improve the grammar of their papers and other writing assignments. I currenly work as a reporter for The Sentinel newspaper in Carlisle, where I must use proper grammar on a daily basis when writing articles. I also often edit other people's work.
As an English lover and a person to whom proper grammar and engaging writing comes naturally, I have often been called upon to proofread the work of classmates, friends, and others. I currently work as a reporter for a newspaper in Carlisle, where I must often edit other people's work to ensure the quality of their writing. I have an eye for catching grammatical and spelling mistakes. More importantly, I explain methods of writing that improve the clarity, persuasiveness, and excitement of the work in ways that others usually find helpful. I will be thorough in my review of another's work, but in an encouraging way that teaches the writer how he or she can improve.
