About Bob

I have been involved in education for 40+ years and throughly enjoyed the excitement and enthusiasm of students of all ages! I have worked with regular ed. and special ed. students ranging from 4th grade up to college. My 'specialities' are science, math, English, writing and communication skills with a preference for middle school curricula.

Tutoring is all about empowering the student - developing a CAN DO attitude. Learning is and should be FUN and exciting. I am a team player and will do my best to support the student's regular curriculum but at the same time I will employ whatever is needed from my 'bag of tricks' so that the student is successful and feels pride in his/her accomplishments.

I will work hard and expect the same from my students. And unlike conventional wisdom, I have found that students relate best when appropriately challenged - the key operative word being 'appropriately'.

Lastly, I have helped to train hundreds of master's level teachers, written numerous articles and chapters in books and presented workshops and symposia locally, statewide, nationally and internationally. But my first and foremost passion is that of working with students and sharing in their success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

For the vast majority of my 40-plus years as an educator, I worked with K-8 students in MA. I taught all subjects over the course of that time plus I coordinated numerous after school activities and clubs which involved reading and language and science discovery and math. Once a week I tutored students in any subject area that they were having difficulty. I received teacher of the year from my colleagues in 1999 and teacher fo the year in the education of students with hearing loss from the state of MA. I have both written and/or coordinated curricula in all elementary school subjects.

Grammar

I have written chapters for professional journals, done extensive curriculum development work and presented numerous workshops and short courses for professionals both in MA and throughout the United States and England.

Hard Of Hearing

For the vast majority of my 40-plus years as an educator, I worked with K-8 students at the Clarke School for the Deaf in MA. While there I taught all subjects over the course of that time plus I coordinated numerous after school activities and clubs which involved reading and language and science di9scovery and math. Once a week I tutored students that they were having difficulty in any aspect of the curriculum. I also served as principal of the middle school at Clarke and coordinated a summer program for children with hearing loss. I received teacher of the year from my colleagues in 1999 and teacher of the year in the education of students with hearing loss from the state of MA. I have both written and/or coordinated curricula in all elementary school subjects and written and lectured nationally and internationally on topics pertinent to the education of students with hearing loss.

Phonics

In all the work that I have done with students with hearing loss over a 40+ year time span, each day phonics was incorporated into my lessons. In helping them to learn to read, write and talk, coding and decoding are essential skills for these chidlren. Also, I have attended numerous professional development workshops and received professional development credits on the topic of phonics as part of my recertification process. Finally, in order to have effectivley worked with children who have hearing loss, phonics was an integral part of their daily curricula.
