About Mark

When in high school, I tutored a couple of guys in Geometry. Then I started college instead of my senior year. After finishing my first year of college, I enlisted in the United States Navy for 6 years and 3 months. While in the Navy, I studied electronics and radars, served on an aircraft carrier (USS Saratoga), went to Nuclear Power School (graduated top in my class) and then to prototype. At prototype, I qualified as a Reactor Operator and was selected to stay as a Staff Instructor. After completing my tour as a Staff Instructor, I was sent to the USS Nautilus to complete my enlistment.

After getting out of the Navy, I went back to college and received my degree in Mathematics, which was pretty easy for me and I did not have to backtrack on any course to get my degree. After college, I worked for American Hofmann for a year using my electronics background, and then I went to work at NSA as a Cryptologic Mathematician for the next seven years. While at NSA, I tutored mathematics for a friend for 2 weeks. After NSA. I worked several jobs, including as substitute teacher in Roanoke City Schools. I worked almost every day, and I was known as a strict, but fair, disciplinarian. I relished trying to teach whenever I could. I also taught Basic Electronics and Soldering Techniques at a community college. After that, I worked several jobs in engineering, as a controls engineer morphing into an electrical engineer over the years.

In college, I took Advanced Calculus, Statistics and Probability, Differential Equations, Error Analysis and Complex Algebra. I figure I can aid people in ACT Math, Algebra 1 and 2, and Calculus. I would probably be rusty with Differential Equations, without some review.

Over the years, I have enjoyed Mathematics and used some different areas in my work as necessary. I have an excellent memory, and can recall even my college teachers. I look forward to hearing about your problems and scheduling lessons to help you, if I can.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
