About Katie

My love of both learning and teaching comes from growing up with teachers that made learning FUN. If you're having fun, you don't realize just how much work you're putting in. This fundamental belief is what helped me earn honors in both high school and college while pursuing a degree in biology.

In the past, I've taught biology, anatomy, and environmental science in a hands-on environment, often using live animals and plants for lessons and demonstrations. More recently, I've spent time working one-on-one with special needs students honing in their reading and comprehension skills, as well as helping in math and science.

My goal for each and every student is to instill a love of learning by providing short, fun assignments to reinforce current lessons as well as build study skills. I'm generally available in the evening during the week as well at least one day each weekend. My rate is $25.00/hour.

I look forward to working with you - please don't hesitate to contact me so we can work on your education plan!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

During college, anatomy was my favorite of all classes. I was able to take comparative anatomy which not only studied humans, but over a dozen other animals and insects as well. I have plenty of teaching experience in this area from my time working as an environmental educator where my days were spent feeding, handling, medicating, and teaching about the adaptations of each animal to varied audiences, but largely children.

Ballet

I originally began college as a dance major, studying ballet, tap, and everything in between. I worked as a substitute/student teacher for 2 years while I danced in a company before teaching my own classes at a studio. To date, I have been teaching dance for over 8 years and there are few things that I love more than being able to share this art with others.

Biology

As a recent college grad, I hold a B.A. in biology and am pursuing a master's in science education. Working at both a nature center and an elementary school, I've learned that the best way to understand broad concepts in science is to break them down into smaller, more manageable units and build upwards. It is important to have a strong foundation to lean on when studying more complex areas. As a teacher, I encourage asking questions, watching videos, and making graphic organizers to help students approach areas that are difficult for them from all angles.

Great reviews from my 14 year old

My son has met with Katie twice. It's his first time with a tutor on a subject he does well in but finds challenging - Biology. This was his second time getting with her and he is really "enjoying" his lessons. I say "enjoy" because it is Biology you know. He speaks very highly of his time with her and looks forward to the next lesson. Well done Katie! I hope she doesn't mind working with h
