About Teri

Hi, My name is Teri and I have dedicated my life to giving students the skills necessary to thrive at whatever they choose to do in life. I have been teaching for twenty-plus years in grades PreK3 - adult and have worked with all students, from those that are gifted to those in life skills classes. I am a mother of five and a grandmother of ten. All of my children have grown up to be assets to society and my grandchildren are also well on their way to a full life with many choices.
The first thing you will notice about me is my sunny smile and my enthusiasm for teaching and learning. I make learning fun, but I never waste time. As a Reading Specialist, I make sure that my students always have in their possession materials that they can read and understand. Struggling readers face enough frustration in school every day, they don't need another dose of that from me.
If I can assist you or your child, please contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I am a reading specialist with 20 + years of experience in education and 12+ years in Reading education specifically. I have a master's degree in reading and I understand how the brain works in students with dyslexia. I know that this problem originates in the language center of the brain, specifically in the area of phonological awareness. By improving skills in this area a young student will open the neuropathways to the comprehension section of the brain.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have an associate degree in early childhood education. I have a bachelor's degree in elementary ed. I have been teaching and tutoring for 20 plus years. I believe that it is very important, when teaching young children, to start where they currently are in their learning and build from that level.

Phonics

I have a master's as a reading specialist and have been teaching and tutoring for 20+ years. I have taught reading for 14+ years and have commonly worked two jobs, teaching during the day and tutoring at night. My last year teaching 7th grade Intensive Reading, 87% of my students made learning gain with many testing out of Intensive Reading.

Sewing

I have been sewing for more than 40 years. I had home economics in middle school and high school. I have made everything from curtains to wedding gowns, children's clothes, quilts and purses. I have been teaching for twenty plus years in grades PreK3 - adult.

Social Studies

I have a B.A. in elementary education and have taught elem. social studies for six-plus years. This is also an area I am very interested in. I have also written cross-curricular materials to support the middle school s.s. curriculum with reading strategies and study skills.

Study Skills

I have been a Reading Specialist and a literacy coach at the elementary and middle school levels. I am a trained Train-The-Trainer and have written and presented many inservices on study skills.I have been trained in presenting CRISS Strategies and have written cross-curricular materials for study skills in different content areas.

TEAS

I have a master's degree, Reading Specialist and have been teaching for 20 + years and tutoring for 5 + years. I have taught ACT prep, FCAT prep and SAT prep and my students did well. I teach using fun, relevant, engaging lessons.
