Hello! I'm Laura. For the past four years, I have been teaching brass instruments full time at an international school in Malaysia. I'm now back in the United States and ready to connect with students locally again. I began teaching trombone and euphonium when I was in high school, and I have always loved being able to help students develop into fine brass players and well-rounded musicians. Aside from trombone and other brasses, I have also tutored in music theory, aural skills and music history. My goal as a teacher is to provide the best education for aspiring musicians and help them to succeed in their next audition or transition to a new phase in their musical education and career. While I remain focused on music, it is important to note that I am committed to the safeguarding of students and have a genuine concern for their well-being.

In addition to teaching, I am also an active performing trombonist in several genres. While in Malaysia, I substituted with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and was a regular member of local hip hop and jazz ensembles. I am currently a member of the Low Brass Project Trombone Duo. I hold two master's degrees from the University of Michigan in Trombone Performance and in Chamber Music, and graduated magna cum laude from Baldwin Wallace University with a degree in Trombone Performance. The combination of my career and education have helped me to provide my students both knowledge based on experience and a network of professional musicians with whom they may take up further study or be hired for gigs.

I am delighted to get to know you and your passion! Let's work together to help you develop into the musician you want to be.

During my time as a music teacher in a British international school, I also served as a form tutor. I assisted the studies of students in my form in a variety of subjects, especially mathematics. Additionally, I liaised between the music department and inclusion (special needs) to help identify students who may have a difference of abilities and create individualized learning plans for students who needed additional assistance.

I also liaised between the Music Department and the Inclusion (Special Needs) Department to help them identify (especially new) students quickly when they were showing signs of differences in learning style or struggling with tasks. This allowed our school to more efficiently investigate when a student needed help and create a plan suited to their needs. As both a music teacher and a form tutor, I made a practice of coaching my students through their busy schedules so they could ensure time to meet all their responsibilities for studies, individual music practice time, and sports.

I have completed TEFL and TESOL training through Global Language Training UK. Though I’m an American, I spent the past four years working in a British institution, which makes teaching UK or American English easy. I have spent many years abroad, and have grown familiar with common mistakes amongst even the most fluent ESL speakers, primarily those from Southeast Asia and South America. I am ready to help you sound like a native English speaker!

While solfege and aural skills are necessary for the learning of brass instruments, the bulk of my teaching of these subjects came from teaching online lessons during the pandemic, when my students didn't all have access to instruments. I taught children ages 9 - 16 to sing solfege and how to dictate simple, diatonic melodies with great success. I was also a certified music theory and aural skills tutor through Baldwin Wallace University while I was an undergraduate music student.
French Horn,

French Horn

I have taught brass in schools full time for the past four years, and I have a great deal of experience in teaching beginning French horn students in both the group and private setting. My teaching is based on developing a strong set of fundamentals. For any more advanced student who is seeking to address specifically the technical aspects of their playing, I have experience with teaching undergraduate horn players as well.
Music Theory,

Music Theory

My most recent teaching of Music Theory was in one-to-one lessons preparing students in the British school system to prepare for A' Level and GCSE Music courses and ABRSM exams. My exam students have a history of passing ABRSM Grade 5-8 Theory with Distinction. I was also hired as a tutor through my undergraduate institution to tutor my fellow students in music theory and aural skills while earning my bachelor's degree in Trombone Performance.
Sight Singing,

Sight Singing

As a trombonist and brass teacher, there is no secondary skill more important to my playing than the ability to sing! Sight singing is a critical skill for conceptualizing the notes, intervals, and musical expression of a piece for any instrumentalist. It is the primary way in which we develop audiation - the ability to hear music in your head before performing it. While I was a singer in my younger years, I continued to practice the ability to sight sing to make me more effective in trombone practice beyond undergraduate and graduate studies. I am happy to train musicians of any kind to practice more effectively and develop audiation through sight-singing.

Patient, positive and skilfull tutor

My son of 9 years old had a difficult time reaching 6th position, holding his horn up properly for long periods, and maintaining good embouchure, but with Laura's instruction he's been able to work through these pain points. Her teaching style is very balanced as she provides tender but also firm guidance! As a result my son is sight reading, tonging his notes, and no longer puffing his cheeks while playing! I look forward to his continued improvement through her instruction and highly recommend Laura as a tutor for any young aspiring trombonist.

All-around great tutor!

Laura is such an excellent tutor! She is extremely knowledgeable and is always so kind and patient with our 9 year-old. She definitely has the right skills and demeanor to teach beginning learners! She seems truly committed to helping our son have a good experience learning the trombone! She is also extremely conscientious. For example, she has gone out of her way to find learning materials that are just right for his stage of learning and she sends really helpful and thoughtful feedback at the end of the lessons. Last, she is really friendly, and easy to schedule with. We have been so impressed and cannot recommend her more highly!!
