About Katherine

I am eager to tutor your student in English, Great Books/Classics, Homeschooling, History, Public Speaking, Piano, Literature, Test Prep, Essay Writing (including college applications), College Application Coaching, Proofreading, Vocabulary, and related subjects. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, minoring in International Studies, in 2011. I obtained my Masters in Theological Studies in 2014 and am a second year doctoral student in philosophy at Villanova Uniersity, where I am also a teaching assistant for undergraduates. I was accepted at eleven highly ranked schools as an undergraduate, assisted my siblings with their admissions processes and would be delighted to share my tips and strategies with you. I am available to tutor students from middle school on up in listed subjects.
In addition to my academic skills, I am a classically trained pianist and violistl. After graduating, I played in small ensembles and still practice regularly to keep my repertoire current. I would be delighted to help your budding musician (or you yourself!) polish skills to play with confidence and enjoyment!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I successfully applied as a homeschooler to 13 colleges, was accepted at eleven, and assisted my younger siblings in their successful college applications. I excel at strategizing where to apply; planning timetables for visits, deadlines, and application materials; and following up with an applicant to help ensure a timely submission with a minimum of stress! College applications are an exciting time of life, and I'm happy to help keep the excitement in the process!

Homeschool

I was homeschooled for my elementary education and online throughout middle school and high school (with occasional college courses during high school). I am particularly sensitive to the interests of gifted students. I am familiar with homeschooling methods of unschooling, unit studies, Calvert School, Great Books Curriculum, and the Montessori method, but am open to tutoring students with different methodological approaches. I also have a particular interest in tutoring students attending private schools which are not registered as home schools, but which have a unique approach to education.

Piano

I grew up taking private lessons from the age of 5 through 18. I participated in chamber music ensembles, statewide competitions, and summer institutes. After graduation, I continued to play in small ensembles and informal groups. I am passionate about music, and I would be delighted to help your student achieve!

Reading

I have assisted students in reading since I helped teach my younger siblings to read. I am patient, friendly, and strategic about improving reading comprehension and retention.

Religion

I read theology and religious studies material independently throughout high school. At my undergraduate school, Bryn Mawr College, I actively participated in interreligious programming, took religious studies courses and continued to read independently. I was selected in my sophomore year to serve as the College's Student Interfaith Coordinator to coordinate campus-wide programming around religious issues. I received Bryn Mawr College's Thomas Prize in Diversity for my efforts. In my masters program, I studied religious theory in the Christian Tradition. I'm excited to pursue the encounter of philosophy with religion at Villanova University! My approach to religious studies is one of openness, curiosity, and critical engagement to better understand what religious texts, traditions, and adherents say to us, the inquirers.

SAT Writing

I obtained a high score on the writing section before entering my undergraduate program at Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, PA. As an undergraduate student and TA, I tutored students in writing and paper planning. I was also twice selected to serve as a writing tutor at my college. In my upcoming PhD studies at Villanova University, I will serve as a writing tutor at the college's Writing Center.

Writing

I have four years of tutoring experience, including a year of tutoring writing as a doctoral student, for Villanova University's writing and tutoring programs. This past year, I was a teaching assistant in two courses at Villanova and facilitated writing support. This summer, I served as an instructor for two courses for middle school students.
