I retired from 30 years of teaching kindergarten, and during my tenure I made it my responsibility to evaluate each individual learning style. Armed with that knowledge I altered the curriculum to benefit each child. If a student was a visual learner, I created an atmosphere of visual stimuli; if a child learned auditorially, I used tapes and placed a child toward the front of the classroom, so there was little distraction, and if a child learned tactilely, the room was filled with manipulatives. Each child was encouraged to achieve their personal best.
After leaving the classroom, I became an Independent Contractor for the Yale-based Haskins Laboratory. Haskins is a brain research reading program that has developed many phonic strategies to help the reluctant student gain confidence and skills. I worked in the lowest performing school in the Stratford, CT public school system. I worked with students, as well as with Reading Specialists and classroom teachers so that after I left they were able to integrate the decodable skills into their own curriculum. Within one year, the school went from the lowest performing schools to one of the best. In an earlier project, I used Read Naturally to help third graders increase fluency. I believe in developing a positive relationship with the student in order for each child to fulfill their potential.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

This program was used in one of the lowest performing school in Stratford, CT. and in two years that school became one of the highest performing schools in the region.
